Close, but no cigar July 7, 2008 Mr. John Connell (UK) This was a piece of cake to install, and with N spec USB on our Dell laptop and as standard on our MacBook and MacBook Pro's, the speed was 270 and range excellent throughout the house. In fact 5 stars until...day 6 when the wireless just packed up. The lamp was illuminated on the modem, but the device could not be detected by either of our 2 laptops, 2 MacBooks, a Desktop PC, I-Pod Touch, 4 various Nokia phones (you get the message). After a fruitless 70 minutes on the phone to someone in NetGear technical support in India (with an accent so strong I could barely understand him), instructing me to change channel etc, he pronounced that it can't be the modem that is at fault, and I should contact Nokia, Apple, Dell & Toshiba to report faults with their respective wireless systems!!! So no stars for reliability! I have opted for a replacement unit rather than a refund, lets hope the next one lasts longer.
Childs Play 2 SetUP July 6, 2008 S. Ugradar Very very easy to setup. Just keep pen and paper handy to write down all the Passwords you create. And put the CD in the drive and follow the instructions. Your 12 years old can do it. Highly Recommended.
Stopped working June 29, 2008 Zoidberg (London) I've had this router for just over a year now and it's suddenly stopped working properly. Turning it on and off doesn't help - the correct lights don't come on. Sometimes, it works after I leave it turned off for long periods of time. Not impressed.
Speedy And Simple June 10, 2008 Daniel Merriott (London, UK) Wow! I bought this to replace my old v1 DG834G which had been around the blocks for several years, and I couldn't be happier... Being already familiar with Netgear's menus and setup it took less than 5 minutes to install and configure (including a bunch of custom firewall rules and custom services) and hey-presto we're working. I have various devices on my network, including Dell and Apple kit of varying ages, and as I reused the old wirelss security options, none of it needed to be reconfigured. What's more, I now get a 'very good' or 'excellent' signal in parts of my home where I previously had only flakey coverage, and my newer kit is able to take advantage of the 'N' network and work much faster (up to 100Mb/s, not quite the theoretical maximum, but a significant improvement). The difference is amazing. The one thing I didn't try was importing the settings of my device onto this device. Not sure if that would work or not, but given it's so quick to setup I didn't bother. Finally, the firmware needed updating to the latest version (see http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834N.asp), but that was completely painless and only took a couple of minutes.
my best ever router May 7, 2008 Mr. D. Oxley (UK) Simply my best ever router. I've made it even better with some custom 3rd party fanware firmware. All that's needed now is netgear to do a new version including the custom firmware mods, iron a few bugs out, upgrade to a gigabit network and capability to have guests connected in a wireless dmz. Maybe even a fancy display like the latest belkin 'n'. 'Fon' compatibility would be even better.
