5 out of 5 stars Excellent trackball (and does work on Vista to an extent)   September 18, 2008
J. P. Gibbins (UK)
I bought one of these a couple of years ago and love using it. It's a little on the expensive side, but since I bought it to ease RSI problems, it has certainly been worth it for me. It *does* work on Vista to an extent - at least for me it does. The ball, scroll wheel and three buttons work without any additional software. The problem is that the software that allows you to program the buttons and adjust the scroll speed, etc is not fully supported on Vista. Apparently if you use it with a PS-2 connection rather than USB, the software works, but I haven't tried this.

The ball is a decent size meaning that you are not scrunching your hand around a mouse, but instead have your palm open over the trackball. The rest makes it more comfortable to use, but it a bit tricky to remove once attached (I coax the black stems out of the bottom with a ruler). The scroll wheel stopped working for me after 2 years, but the 5 year warranty on this product meant I've now got a replacement trackball. Despite the problem with the scroll wheel, I really can't fault it. I will say, however, that the US support team were more helpful over email than the UK team. A call into the UK team was far more productive than email.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Trackball, Ignore the Other Review!   June 29, 2008

This is a fantastic trackball, the build quality is excellent, it's very responsive and accurate (I'm a 3D Visualiser) and you really can't get better for this sort of money.

If you want to get the Mouseworks software working in vista, simply add a 'Human Interface Device' in new hardware and use the file kmw_usb.sys from your driver disc, hey presto! works every time.

A great buy!

1 out of 5 stars THIS PRODUCT IS OBSOLETE, DON'T BUY IT!   June 13, 2008

Kensington have decided not to support Vista for the Expert Mouse, and therefore you are wasting your money as under Vista, only the trackball and the two mouse buttons work. The four buttons cannot be programmed. Also do not try installing the XP software as you will then have to reinstall your entire operating system as I had to do, after talking to Kensington "Technical Support" for over 30 minutes on an international phone call. A complete joke of a company, and I will be barbecuing my trackball as soon as a reputable company that supports its customers emerges with a superior product. I have 5 of these wretched things, because they are the best trackball on the market, but unfortunately, they have Kensington selling them, they are the joke, but they are laughing at us. What kind of company designs a product that won't work on the latest operating system? Answer: Kensington.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mouse, shame about the software   May 9, 2008

I have used an older version of the expert mouse for about six years and love it. I decided to 'upgrade' to this optical version recently and have to say it is even better. Very smooth, the scroll ring is a great addition and it does not get clogged as often as the old mechanical version. Kensington have stated that the Mouseworks software will not work under Vista and they are not going to update it to do so! This makes the extra buttons useless as you cannot program them. However, there is a work around for 32bit Vista - buy a USB to PS2 adapter and connect it to a PS2 port. The software then works and allows you to program the buttons etc.

5 out of 5 stars spot on as a pointing device BUT NOT VISTA COMPATIBLE!   April 30, 2008
Derek Williams (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.)

I bought three of these devices only to discover that Kensington do not support it with Vista drivers, meaning that only the bottom two buttons will work with the default Vista drivers. I emailed customer support at Kensington about this problem and they informed me that there are no drivers for Vista and that they are not developing any. They said the mouse works fine with the default Vista drivers anyway, but when I informed them that only the bottom two buttons work as left and right click, they said that that was the best they could do, and would I like to return the product.

This is the best trackball on the market and for it to be made obsolete like this while it is still being sold is absolutely shocking. There are short term workarounds like using XP emulation from Properties etc, but clearly this company has zero interest in supporting its own products past the current OS and only wants to make money by making you throw away a mouse in perfect working order to buy another that is exactly the same. Naturally, if I have to do this, it will not be from Kensington.
