Do not buy this map! October 20, 2008 Jeremy Tafler (England) Believe, oh believe the negative feedback. This product is awful. Not because the Ordinance Survey have only released low quality mapping but because of the Garmin copy protection systems. It took me days to get the map unlocked and only through repeated (slow) contact with customer support (and I am not that stupid). But then my hard drive went down necessitating a reinstall. Impossible - I'm still trying and very very angry.
Not bad October 16, 2008 John This isn't the OS 1:25000 on your GPS. However within the limitations of my etrex its not bad at all. One thing to watch is the "detail" level, some poor choices about what to display are made with this set to "normal" a lot of the detail of the map does not show up except at very high zoom levels. This can make it look like paths are broken up. Under vista the unlock wizard does not work. However if you click "unlock map" from within mapsource, install the plugin linked on the page that comes up", and then try to unlock again it works fine. One unexpected bonus is that this does include address and routing information so that you can use it for navigation while driving as well as hiking.
Be warned October 4, 2008 Graham Wright (West Sussex) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I went round and round in circles trying to unlock this damn map for the Garmin eTrex HC. Firstly, you will need to update Map Source and then find the serial number for the Pathfinder model you have. This can be found in the Settings of some models as far as I can gather. I nearly went nuts trying to find the serial number for the eTrex Venture HC. It's in the battery compartment stupid. No reference to it in the instruction manual. Having downloaded the bit of extra software needed to find the device dduring the unlocking process, I thought I was prepared only to realise that you have to get a 25 digit code before the map can be unlocked. No where are you warned about this. I took it that the 8 digit code that comes with the map (cleverly hidden in the wrapping which is so easily discarded) is all that is necessary. No. I also had to dig out my Customer Code. So, to summarise - here's what you need to unlock this rather mediocre set of maps: 1. Map Source v 6.14.1; 2. the extra bit of software for your computer to recognise the hardware which you download from Garmin; 3. your customer code; the unit ID which is automatically obtained during this rediculous process; 4. and the "Internal" serial number. How you get this depends on your unit model.
Unable to unlock maps September 13, 2008 T. West (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can't review the maps because the software refuses to unlock them. This is a dreadful piece of programming!
TOPO Great Britain V2 September 4, 2008 WAD68 (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I must express my dissappointment with the Garmin Topo Great Britain V2 maps. Not only with a tiny Reduced Map Window For Detail when viewing and planning routes on computer but also the map content; contour lines blurr and smear at certain zoom levels, pathways start and stop in the middle of nowhere, bridges, paths, rivers and roads missing, or incorrectly shown. The worst part though, Garmin offer no other mapping software for the UK, therefore making its excellent mapping GPS units ineffective. I also experienced installation problems, having to contact Garmin several times to unlock the license. To be used allong with OS paper maps, not as I hoped, to replace them.
