Excellent entry level satnav August 10, 2008 D. Phelan (Ireland) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is my second Garmin satnav. The Nuvi 270 performs very well around Ireland, with excellent satellite tracking. The tinny voice is a bit annoying but that's the price for such a neat & portable unit. It has a simulation mode for planning your journeys abroad, and it is excellent at handling Points of Interest (POI) files. The options for finding your location are very good, and include the option of directly entering the GPS co-ordinates. I look forward to the day when your local Yellow Pages includes GPS for all commercial locations. When using the various search options, the results are displayed in the order of proximity which makes it easy to find the nearest restaurant, bank, or petrol station etc. There's an excellent map scrolling facility, and you can chose to navigate directly to anything you find on the map. This model only allows you to chose one via-point on your route, but as you reach each via-point along the journey you can programme in the next point on-the-fly. The instruction manual is poor but the built-in help files are a better source of instruction, if you need it. In fairness, this is so simple to operate there's no need for a manual. The picture viewer facility is also quite poor for viewing the kind of large images that a standard 5MegaPixel camera takes, but did you really pay this money to see your pictures on a 3" LCD screen?
Excellent Product May 28, 2008 Frederick Orchard 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I needed a Sat Nav after visiting the US. a few weeks ago. I plumped for this model on the basis that I was given a Garmin (older Model) with my hire car and it faultlessly navigated me around New England. I have just returned from a second trip and this model performed perfectly. The only time I had cause to sweat was going through the tunnels in Boston but this little gem just re-calculated as soon as it could receive the signal. I would recommend that you buy this model over the lower priced units without the US. map as it is when you are out of the UK. when you will need it the most!
Goodbye road atlas, hello sat nav. April 16, 2008 Mr. A. Moore (Redditch UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the first sat nav I have used and I am very pleased it. To set up straight out of the box was very quick once I had charged the batteries. Initial charge was a slow process (overnight) but once this was completed the unit found the satelights in around 30 seconds and that was inside my kitchen near the window. It told me where I was instantly. I have only had probleminding the satelights once and simply moving the unit across my dashboard from the side to the middle solved this instantly. Route planning is simple from an alphanumeric touch screen display into which a postcode or full address can be typed, this is very easy. Routes can be either fastest or shotest and detours to see places of interest can be incorporated. Take a wrong turn and a new route is quickly calculated. Voice commands are clear as is the display and plenty of time is given before turning is reached enabling you to prepare well in advance. The traffic speed camera facility is very good and has certainly slowed me down which is a good thing. I did not use the windscreen mount so cannot comment on this but the dashbrd mount purchased separately does not move and holds the sat nav very securely well worth the extra expense. The only down side, and this is very minor is if enter a pin number for extra security the unit does not allow you a second chance so you have to return to your security place to unlock it; as this has mape for the whole world this could be a problem! I would highly recommend this wonderful and easy to use device. Goodbye road atlas.
Brilliant! November 21, 2007 Mr. Dominic Langmead (Scarborough (UK)) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I spent well over 3 days looking at what GPS to get my parents for christmas. Firstly i started off with TOMTOM after just seeing an advert for one (yes advertising works!) then after reading some reviews of "looses signal", "gets lost" "cheap tack" and "falls of window" i switched to Navmans. I know nothing about this technology so i hunted around again at the latest Navmans and after finding one with Europe/USA mapping it was really expensive. I then went onto my flight simulator X (brill btw) and noticed that my B747 had a Garmin GPS system. That got me thinking and i worked out that if areoplanes use it then they must be a good make. After flying around Boro in a plane i went to Garmin website and looked at each model under 260, started with the 250 which is good but only simple mapping, then up to the European version, i nearly bought this one off Amazon because of the cheap price and good reviews. but i didnt.. after asking mum/dad some questions, i discovered plans to go the USA in a few years time, then i looked at this little gem of the Nuvi 270. After hunting around i found prices ranging from 260 (gps.com [or something similar] to 150 on Ebay), i avoided ebay on this one in case it goes wrong as i know Amazon have a brill returns policy. SOo i buy it off here for 211.99 (Nov 2007) and it arrived a few days later by HDNL. I got it out and without reading the instructions set it up, after around 30seconds it found the Street, Town and Country of where i was. and i'd accurate to within about 10feet. I then tested it out, best route to Cheltenham (one that i took regulary) was the same as what i would take anyway, brilliant then Scotland again avoiding the Whitby Coastal road was a wise choice. I love this little Garmin, although not really tested it seems pretty good with all the extras, i would go with this instead any of the ones that play music (thats what iPods are for, not Satnavs) (get an FMT for listening to pod in the car) So if you want a GPS go for this gem, well work 211
Excellent value November 1, 2007 P. Beavan (Worcester) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had wanted a SatNav with European maps preloaded for some time and was waiting for prices to fal to acceptable levels. Then I saw the 270 advertised with USA mapping preloaded as well..the only problem was the price. Amazon.co uk launched an offer and I took the plunge. The Nuvi 270 sems a remarkable piece of kit in that it has all the maps preloaded (I did not want to bother having to down-load maps every time I went to Europe or the USA). The good news is it works, I have used it in UK and Florida. It takes a few minutes to relocate itself when changing countries and to find the relevant satellites. The voice instructions are clear and precise. The mapping is sometimes out of date (told us to look for a roundabout on the A38 which has since been removed). Have to be careful with keep right or left commands when the are no obvious alternatives. The biggest problem we found was when trying to locate a shop, we had the post code but no street number so I had to guess one...the unit took us to the wrong end of a long street and we only found the shop by chance but this is the fault of the post code system and the failure of the shop to use its full address rather than the 270. I would give it 5 stars if it had not cost us 30 minutes driving down narrow Devon roads towing a caravan because I mis-understood a command (I swear it was a poor instruction though the wife may say something different). In my view it is not a complete substitute for a map reader but it is a very handy confirmation that you are heading the right way.
