4 out of 5 stars Nice after initial problems   September 1, 2008

Very happy with my Nuvi 255WT now - it gives clear, helpful directions, easy to use even for a novice like me. The traffic service seems spot on (though - as a previous review notes - the journey times are optimistic and so are the delay times). Though the instructions are brief a bit of exploring is showing me how to get the best out of a logical menu structure.

But my initial experience was not good. To register the produce you have to update the software online. In my case, the updating failed, and instead wiped all the software, leaving the unit unusable. (Website does warn of this problem so I'm obviously not the only person to suffer it.) Emailing Garmin's online support produced no response at all. Phoning their telephone support (after the customary call centre delays) did produce a helpful soul, who sent me the software by email. I eventually get this to work but it was very counter-intuitive (and though a satnav newbie I'm quite techie with a PC) and tricky - non-self-extracting .zip files embedded within a Word doc, none of which quite corresponded to the emailed instructions.

Hopefully this updating problemis rare. I wouldn't be put off buying but I'm not looking forward to tackling any future online updates!

5 out of 5 stars Saved all the arguments !!!!!!!!!   August 17, 2008

Bought the Nuvi 255WT just before driving to Italy this year and found it worked superbly. Did over 2500 miles without a hitch and saved any problems that I cause for my wife who is the usual map reader/route planner. Didn't need all the extras such as playing through car radio and connecting to phone so went for this as a good saving on Tom Tom. The traffic cameras and holdups info. worked equally well in Europe and the mapping there isn't just major roads. I can highly recommend it.

I bought this as my first navigation device based on the reviews given here and I am very pleased to say it is superb. It does exactly what you would expect. Neat, easy to view, easy to use, reliable, sturdy - I cannot praise it enough. It is better than the Tom-toms (which seem very good in themselves)I have seen friends use and they too are impressed with my new toy! Took it for a real try out in the middle of Bristol with all the road works etc going on. Only confused me once but it immediately corrected my route so no worries. Can't speak more highly for it. Brilliant.

Garmin Nuvi 255WT - European Mapping, Widescreen, Built-in Traffic

Spent quite a bit of time reading reviews, looking at actual units and comparing similar products.
The 255WT does everything I wanted, was a great price and is a doddle to use. For anyone that wants a well designed unit you can use on and off the car, with W Europe maps and FM travel data this is an excellent buy.
I love the screen, the size of the unit and it was very easy to get going with out of the box.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money, and very simple to use.   July 27, 2008

I bought the Garmin Nuvi 255T about two weeks ago now, and have used it to do quite a lot of long travelling in England. I chose it over a TomTom because for the same functions, it was almost a 100 cheaper, and it looked better too...

My first impressions were very positive. It looks very simple, and is easy to use. I was happy to see that you could change the mapping options, from the perspective view, to a view from above, where the map moves under the car, and another view from above where the car moves on the map (which is aligned north), which is my own setting.

Second to this the voice commands are clear, and the display is excellent, even in extremely bright weather. The night mode inverts the map, so that it doesn't glare, and this turns on automatically.

However, there are a few points I wasn't too happy about. A few times now, it has told me to turn when the road turns that way anyway, so I'm not actually turning off the road. This I found annoying, and I found the time estimations to be off, on a long journey, with no holdups worth mentioning, it was short by about 15%. The searches for amenities, or `points of interest' can be a bit hit and miss, but when you use the map, especially when out of your car in `pedestrian' mode, to find local things it is very helpful, and impressive in the scale of the coverage.

The speed camera detection is brilliant and has worked every time! The traffic detection works as well, (which has an ariel in the rather bulky car power lead), and the mapping is excellent, picking up one way systems with no problem.

I heavily recommend this sat nav.
