This book is well written, with good photos giving the runner an indepth guide on how to train for a marathon or half marathon. In my case I used it's information and running schedules to aid me to train for running my first half marathon and as a result I succeeded all my expectations. Thanks

3 out of 5 stars It's ok, nothign too great in my opinion   September 16, 2008

I was really looking forward to it since it was so highly ranked. But I must say I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I had high expectations as well, but I think in the end this book doesn't give you much more than what you can easily find on the internet. Some basic tips on nutrition, running plans, etc. Nothing much on running technique, psychological stuff, etc.

I was always looking to start running out side the gym but I was always looking for a training guide, finally this book helps to improve my running ability. It's almost like having a personal trainer side by side. Will definitely recommend for those who want to start amateur running

This book contains everything you could possibly need to know about training for a marathon or half marathon! It covers all the aspects of preparing for a race with helpful and useful advice and provides week by week training plans to follow. All in all an excellent companion for any runner looking to do a marathon or half marathon, I would highly recommend this book especially to first timers.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and motivational   April 5, 2008

I am pretty much a novice to running but, having put on too much weight after my two kids were born and wanting something to aim for I have signed up for a half marathon later this year. I bought this book hoping for practical advice which would enhance my understanding of how to train and what to expect along the way.
For me this book provides all this and much more. It is aimed at everyone, whether you're a seasoned runner or a complete beginner. It is extremely readable and covers all the main topics in clear language (although a note about whether or not to train through colds etc would be useful for future editions...) It is informative without being dictatorial in its tone, and I felt that the author was very 'tuned in' to most of the questions I would have asked him if I had the benefit of his company!
I'm also find reading the book really motivating - maybe because it's because it's such a practical, useful guide. He acknowledges the big challenges but makes you feel like you can overcome them.
It's early days for my training but it's going well - in no small part thanks to this book.
