Very Good September 16, 2001 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I found Mari's book to be very helpful. It is well structured and has clear photos and instructions for all exercises. It is convenient as an easy reference guide to many Pilates exercises. This book guides you through these exercises in a proper sequence, unlike some other books I have read, thus ensuring maximum benefit and performing them in the correct manner just how Joseph Pilates originally intended. Mari is clearly very passionate about Pilates. The beginning chapters of the book (before the exercises start) I found to be interesting and in places quite profound. She obviously has a lot of strength and spirit and she conveys this well throughout her book.
Great guide to Pilates system August 15, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Mari Winsor's guide to Pilates is an excellent introduction to this fitness regime, and as the exercises are graded from Beginner level to Expert, there are always new challenges. The explanatory photographs are a great help, and the text is generally clear, although in a few places she leaves syntax behind, but you know what she means. There is rather a lot of read-once material bookending the exercises, but it is interesting, and maybe some people would find it inspirational. One quibble is that Vermilion apparently did not edit this with an eye to the UK market - being asked to do something in time to 'America the Beautiful' is confusing if you aren't sure how that goes... On the other hand, the exercises work, and there can be no higher praise.
Frightening - only for professionals April 28, 2001 Mr. Michael Domnin (Kent, UK) 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
Mari Winsor seems to me very complex in her explanations, e.g.it is very difficult to make head or tail about her explanation of "the powerhouse" which must be strengthened. By comparison Lynn Robinson in the Book "Pilates: the way forward" just says "imagine you have to "zip up" your trousers and hollow this area. How much simpler is this image! All the mat exercises are here. Only they are presented in a frightening way. No way could I ever start doing those. Again dealing with exactly the same subject, Michael King in "Pure Pilates" gives the exercises with a set a gradual preparations to them if you are not up to the standard of performance required by the full exercises. If you are an athlete or a dancer (as Mari Winsor is) fine then this book is for you. If you are just a beginner, beware, the book might put you off a tremendous way of exercising. Because what Mari Winsor says is true, Pilates will change your life. Do try it, it feels great. Michael King "Pure Pilates " and Lynn Robinson " The way forward" are better for starters. They are also more engaging.
A fun workout December 7, 1999 Yoni (Israel) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This pilates exercises really are fun to do, and its a nice change for a workout It mainly focuses on the abs(or the "powerhouse") , but also on other mucsles, and are very good for both flexibility and strength. The book is written in a very simple language and easy to understand, the book is also interesting because o all the stuff she tells in the beggining.
