Eastern Breathing Philosophy October 6, 2007 M. A. Ramos (Florida USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I picked up this book (1905 edition) as a martial artist hoping to help me with my KI breathing excerices. This book improved my breathing technique introduced me to yoga and eastern thought. "Science of Breath" provides a great balance between western theories and eastern ideas. This book would be a good aid to anyone in the martial arts or those who just study KI.
Excellent guide to Pranayama June 30, 2003 44 out of 47 found this review helpful
Ignore the slightly evangelical tone of the first chapter, the rest of the book is excellent. Alan Hymes gives a very clear and easy to read explanation of the mechanics of breathing, from a whole body perspective to a cellular level - which I found surprisingly interesting. He explains why your nose runs when you have a cold, why people from different regions of the world have different sized and shaped nostrils, and why the only place on the body apart from the genitals with erectile tissue is the nose! Incidentally, I don't think many people would continue smoking having read this book (I gave up recently and this has put me off for life!).Swami Rama then presents clear instructions for Pranayama exercises, showing exactly how they help the body, and how to perform them. This is the clearest, most concise and readable book on the breath I have read.
