Disappointing July 15, 2008 G. Davies (UK) This book falls short for several reasons. Firstly there is a lot of selling in terms of the `Chi Revolution', telling you why it's so great and how you should get involved. I consider this to be totally unnecessary, as I've already bought the book, so the sales pitch is a bit late! Secondly, although quite a few topics are covered and they're importance stressed, for any detailed explanation on the techniques you are simply referred to a previous book the author has written. The frustration of this constant occurrence finally made me give up on reading the book. I have tried some of the exercises outlined in the back however (just before the 8 page appendix selling the authors products and services) and if they do work I may increase the star rating of this review. To summarise, the authors obvious desire to generate business and money overwhelms any valid information on chi and its applications. If you do intend on getting a book on this subject from the author I'd suggest looking at one of his previous releases that are constantly referred back to in this book.
An excellent book! March 5, 2008 Clear Blue Day (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The easy to understand writing style makes this an effortless read, which lets you get down to absorbing the information better than any other book I've read in this field. It's also a great motivator for your practice and the health giving exercises presented here really work. If you're embarking on anything chi related to improve your health, or just curious about the subject, this is an essential read and should be your first stop. Highly recommended.
Nothing new February 22, 2008 Mr. C. W. Turner (England) 3 out of 11 found this review helpful
Bruce Kumar claims to teach the esoteric art of Taoist water methods of meditation and chi kung. In reality, i find nothing new or different about his books, most of them including this one seem to be more of an advertising ploy to encourage people to attend his expensive chi kung lectures. To me personally there seems to be a complete lack of any warmth to his books, you can find better chi kung books. Bruce himself also seems to have a personal grudge against yoga for some reason, i have practiced both tai chi, chi kung and yoga for many years and personally think that one cannot beat yoga sun salutations for improving health and well being. His opinions of karma in this books are nothing new.
ancient taoist wisdom: accessible, topical and relevant January 31, 2008 C. Hughes (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Another excellent book from Frantzis, a man with a mission. Having spent much of his life immersed in oriental martial, healing, meditative and spiritual practice, Frantzis offers a sharply focused modern interpretation of timeless wisdom from ancient China. In this accessible little book he captures and transmits much of the essence of Taoist philisopy and practice. Topics range from the foundations of spirituality, prayer and meditation, addressing questions about the very core of existence and being, to an incisive challenge of modern myths about health and fitness, along with lively discussion about sex, karma, 'life, the universe and everything'. The last chapters provide detailed yet easy to follow instructions for a first class 'chi workout'.
The book for everyone January 30, 2008 Erin Gilton (Cali) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the only book I have ever read which is a good complete introduction to energy practices. Frantzis has done a good job of simplifying all of this material to make it accessible to everyone while also transmitting enough information that the book has something to offer for everyone (whether you've been doing chi gung your entire life or just learned what breathing is yesterday).
