good for beginners September 1, 2008 Lee Versluys (UK) I bought this book and the pictures and explanations are easy to understand. I have just started jiu-jitsu and on my 3rd lesson I managed to apply a submission from the book on a less than happy fairly experienced (2yrs) practitioner in the sparring part of the lesson.
A fantastic buy! April 28, 2008 S. A. Weller (Northants, England) This book is essential to anyone who is interested in ground fighting. Renzo and Royler Gracie have proved themselves time and time again on the freefight circuit. Whether you are new to ground fighting and want to learn, or a Judo player looking to expand or even a seasoned vet like myself this book is the one to have. It has a good History section explaining fully the Theory and Background of Jiu Jitsu and is fully Illustrated with easy-to-understand sequential Photos. Each Photo has a write up explaining hand positioning, body postioning and movement. By the time you have finished the book, having gone through all blue, purple, brown and black belt techniques, you will be well versed in controlling your opponent from the top, side and bottom positions as well as be able to finish the fight from all of these positions. This book is fantastic.
Very good December 25, 2007 O. Zakariya The explanations are clear and the book is very well illustrated with plenty of photos. A large variety of techniques are covered ranging from easy to advanced. Interesting information on the background behind the formation of the Brazilian form of the art.
What we've been waiting for September 23, 2007 Barry Ley The Gracies are quite simply, legends. This family has hanged the face of martial arts. They have quite literally changed the world. This book is an excellent reference to the sport of BJJ. No less than you would expect from the world's best. More info at www.freewebs.com/barryley
A very good book for beginers October 12, 2004 S. Williamson 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've just started BJJ although I've trained in Martial Arts before. Although the techniques in BJJ don't require any great amount of power or years of training to perform (unlike some of the punching/kicking arts), they are quite technical (and there are lots of them). I find this book a good reference book to refresh the techniques in my mind after a session. Probably no good to someone who has trained for years, but for interested parties or beginers like me its a good book. Its a well written book, put together with lots of clear pictures with key parts of the techniques highlighted.
