1 out of 5 stars Tai Chi or mere Astrology?   February 11, 2004
Jason (Belgium)
5 out of 10 found this review helpful

Once the principles of Tai Chi suddenly become pasted to western new age superstition together with coincidental scientific 'breakthroughs' - well - you know what to expect. Unfortunately that is not how the book was advertised. The author evidently has some understanding of Psychology but almost no understanding of PHILOSOPHICAL principles. The result is what we tend to get in these times: psychological speculation, the throwing of 'seemingly connected' ideas around in a ball park - in ways which are not only speculative, but at times downright silly. This is a book for people with little understanding who are happy to believe anything. If you are one of those persons, then I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   September 27, 2002

This book is extremely spiritual and interesting. The book has actually changed my life. Before reading this book I was remarkably unhealthy and often had health complaints. Since reading this book I have completely changed by dietary and exercise patterns, with a surprisingly positive result. It took some time and a lot of dedication and perseverance but the result was astounding. Graham Horwood is a genius and I feel I owe him a great deal, as he not only changed my outlook on life but also improved my health and vitality, which after all is the most important aspect of living a good life. An absolute must buy!

5 out of 5 stars A book to better yourself   September 27, 2002

From the moment I started this book I could see it was a gradual introduction into an art that was previously unknown to me in any sort of detail. The progressive style is exactly what was needed in order not to scare off a normally very hesitant reader. My main reason for picking up this book was to better not only my outlook on day-to-day life but also to see if there was any truth in Tai-Chi bettering your physical being. The excercices shown, along with example programmes to suit all needs were easy to tap into and continue on, even after I read it. Thank-you.

5 out of 5 stars Yang Style Tai Chi revealed   August 5, 2002

After a gentle and interesting introduction, this book reveals itself to be an in depth study of tai chi, the like of which has not been seen before.

This is the book for those that wish to go further into understanding the real nature of tai chi. In this sense this is the tai chi of the Yang Family with its history and secret techniques. The heart of the book is the exhaustive description of the eight directions and five-element theory in Tai Chi.

Unlike most books this is approached from a western perspective, with the representation of each symbol using a number of correspondences. Not least is the relationships revealed between the eastern and western traditions. Then the hexagrams are related to the corresponding Greek God etc, and most interestingly how this is manifested in the body both in the tai chi form and wellness or illness etc. This is the most complete representation of these relationships I have seen.

In the later chapters this knowledge is put to good use in various previously secret "Yang Family Chi Kungs", with forms of breathing to maximize energy flow. This is all well explained with diagrammatic photos.

This is a book to keep and study, not another of those flimsy introductions to Tai Chi that are so popular, a book to be studied and enjoyed.
