Depends what you like to read March 14, 2007 Madge (Chelmsford) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Folklore is not my thing. There is enough myth out there in taiji without deliberately adding to it.
One of the finest collections of Tai Chi classics you could buy March 7, 2007 Jason Tsang (Kent, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Until I brought this book, I was forever left wanting by the two other books on the subject of Tai Chi Classics in my collection. Waysun Liao's book is good, but ventured into areas that didn't quite fit in. On the other hand "The Taijiquan Classics: An Annotated Translation" by Barbara Davies is good because it covers new material not seen in print. However, the translation is awful and the author showed she was out of her depth in terms of her understanding of Chinese culture and the Chinese language. Moreover, her knowledge of martial arts is very basic. I was very impressed with Dr Yang's book. Included is a number of works that is not often seen in print as well has his translation and commentary on the two most common classic. That is the classics by Zhang San-Feng and Wang Zhung-Yua respectively. The words are clear, brief and easy to read and understand. Dr Yang has gone further by providing a glossary for the Chinese words and what they mean in English. For those who want to take their learning further, all the classics in the book have their original Chinese text at the back. All that in a book smaller and thinner than your average paperback. Dr Yang is an established martial scholar and has written a number of books on Tai Chi. If not always the best, they are worth spending some time over. One of the benefits of Dr Yang's work is that it is based on his own work and experiences. In another words, fresh and without constant reminder of Cheng Man-Ching and his students. Independent thoughts and opinions are important and as students, we should look at learning in a broader sense.
Comprehensive coverage of the Tai Chi classics January 24, 2001 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book offers a clear expansion of the very few words that make up the classics in Tai Chi. The author, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming observes that a complete and accurate translation is impossible, but he tries to give as much information for each verse. He then gives more background, and examples from his own (vast) experience. The book is written for any style of tai chi chuan, and would benefit beginners as well as experienced students of the art.
