5 out of 5 stars The book provides detailed daily nutrition guidelines, numerous, delicious meal options and recipes,   January 24, 2008

David Kirsch focuses on two main factors--exercise and nutrition. The required exercise is one hour each day--and are well explained with the additional aid of photographs that show exactly how to do them. Without a doubt the program is hard but if you succeed in keeping the pace for the first two weeks you will you feel good enough to want to keep going. Kirsch's dieting program suggests five small meals every three hours. Included recipes are simple which enables you to make a quick and tasty meal without spending too much time in the kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars A very tough but healthy wayto get in shape   May 21, 2007

I have just completed my second go of this diet and i cannot recommend it highly enough. The first time i had to lose weight for my wedding last year, i had stopped smoking and gained over a stone and despite eating healthy and being fit, it wasnt budging fast enough. It really gave me a kick start and i had a lovely 26 inch waist by the end of it and felt superfit and toned. This time I have just had a baby (3months ago) and again getting fit and eating healthy but having gained lots while pregnant I wanted to get in shape before my holidays. Again i am over the moon with the results, not only have I lost several inches (I dont weigh myself), but i feel amazing, so full of energy and really motivated to do more (wanting to take up squash and run half marathons for example!). i feel almost as fit as I was before i got pregnant. i have not done any of the abdominal exercices on this as I am doing gentle core exercises which are safer for me so soon after childbirth, but still my muffin top is dissapearing and my belly is going flat as well as my thighs and arms really slimming down. it really does make you feel amazingly healthy and energetic.

However! It is very, very tough, especially, the first 8 days. You need to be pretty fit to do it and I felt bored of the food, tired, weak, antisocial and quite miserable. But by day 10 I felt like a new person and have come on leaps and bounds. I would recommend taking spirulina whilst doing it as once I found i had more energy when i did and it helps with the cleansing process. His recipes suck too! apart from ratatouille, I have to make up my own. But amazingly at the end, you dont crave bad foods, you really dont want to ruin all the hard work, plus your sugar cravings are cured from eating protein adn veg for 2 weeks. He also provides a healthy 4 week phasing in plan so that you can eat the right carbs again without gaining weight. i plan to try adn stick to this and then go back to The Food Doctor principles which ware really healthya dn easy tofollow. But UNYBD will really get you to where you want to be if you have the determination for the 14 days. Good Luck!

5 out of 5 stars THIS REALLY WORKS!!!   April 24, 2007

I came across this book in a newspaper article covering brief reviews on a bunch of diets. At the end, each diet was rated with a 'Yes' or a 'No' as to whether the writer recommended it or not. This book had a 'No' and the reason given was that it was too difficult. And that's why I bought the book becuase I know from past experience that dieting and losing weight, if you want to do it properly, is going to be very tough!
This was very tough but the results are almost immediate - it was WELL worth it! Some tips which I'm sure other reviews will give you too:

- Try to do this with your partner as it really helps for motivation/planning/keeping to yourself for 2 weeks (My husband and I did it and really enjoyed doing the recipes together - it was fun for a change, as opposed to being slumped in front of the TV!)
- Plan, plan, plan! Make sure you have purchased everything you need to do this: Excercise equpiment, Protein Shake and stocked your fridge with all the right foods. If you don't have what you need ALL the time, you will feel more compelled to cheat!
- Believe in yourself that you can achieve your goals! We cheat when we anticipate we will fail anyway, so *know* you can do this.
- Read the daily motivations; it really helps to keep you focused each day and reminds you of your goal.
- I found it easier to isolate myself for 2 weeks, rather than tempting myself by attending social events. You will just feel depressed if you are the only one who isn't drinking/eating.
- The Medicine Ball is not cheap so I just use 1 of my 2kg hand weights for exercises that require it. It works just fine!

Good luck!!

4 out of 5 stars Oh good god.   October 18, 2006

I'm going to start with the bad and leave you with the good :)

1) If you don't already exercise regularly and to a fairly high intensity (capable of 20 press ups and a 45 min run, for example) then don't even think about it. I am capable of both those things and I still struggled to keep it up.

2) The diet is, as another reviewer pointed out, completely crazy and any nutritionist or doctor will tell you that if you're doing this much exercise you need carbohydrates for fuel. Whatever anyone tries to tell you, if you stop craving carbs its only because you're too bloody tired to care.

3) It's not cheap. You'll need a fit ball, a medicine ball, weights, clothing for sweating in (cotton stuff won't cut it at this intensity), lots of weird seasonings and meat, plus protein shakes, which are not cheap at all.

4) It's time consuming- 2hrs a day of exercise, plus all the meal preparation. You really need to find a time when you have no other responsibilties unless you want to completely stress yourself out and be v grumpy for a fortnight.

Ok, now for the good points:

1) You will see results and fast, even if you don't follow the crazy diet to the letter (still take the protein shakes, your muscles will need it)

2) Its so tough the sense of achievement is enormous and your workouts from then on will seem easy.

3) The book is very informative and the day to day layout of workouts and recipes really makes it easy to follow. The diary section is nice for charting the changes you see and feel.

4) The dvd ensures you work at the appropriate pace (plus its funny to watch david's helpers attempting to smile through the pain to convince you its not really painful)

All in all it really helped me step up my training, but it is better used by fit people to shave off those last few pounds, or for a special event, than by people starting from scratch/overweight. Try his more long term books if that's where you are, even David recommends this in the introduction.

Also, for a much more pleasureable experience try combining David's exercise regime with a calorie controlled, but carb and dairy friendly diet. There's far to much evidence of the danger of atkins style diets, not least when you're exercising this much, for it to be worthwhile.

If you're about to embark on your 2 week transformation, good luck!
