It all depends on how you approach this movie September 28, 2008 Jan Willem Wilkens 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A lot of reviews on My Blueberry Nights are sour. People expected something else from the director, the script, from Norah Jones. But that's all a matter of people assuming they can dictate any creator's output (they expect something of the artist that they already saw or heard before, they chain an artist to his previous work and take that to the moment they play a cd for the first time or watch a movie premiere). As a work on it's own: in my humble opinion a beautifully crafted road movie, well, more off-road actually, preparing us slices of life, love and dead. Jude Law and Norah Jones are the soul mates in the leading roles and mainframe of the film, but don't miss David Strathairn and Rachel Weisz in their 'segment'. That's Oscar-material, those two!
Not at all bad, but certainly not great. July 15, 2008 Morris Day (Herts, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Let's start by saying I am somewhat biased - looking through the few reviews I've done will reveal that Wong Kai-Wai has both my no.1 (In The Mood For Love) and no.2 (2046) films - Whilst his first foray into the English Language is not terrible, it certainly is not groundbreaking stuff. Overall I can't help but think of what might of been. Still, this is a good and pretty simple movie. Performance are great - Norah Jones on her acting debut. Rachel Weisz and most notably David Strathairn probably steal the show. Jude Law's Manchester accent, may not be the greatest, but his character is at least likeable. The story follows a Broken-Hearted Norah Jones travelling across America after the breakdown of a relationship after her partner had an affair which she found out during a visit to Law's café, the people she meets, their stories and the relationship between Jones / Law. As I've said this is not a classic, but worth a watch, especially for a Wong Kai-Wai fan who will enjoy the similarities between older works. As always, great direction and stills are used throughout the movie - just shame the script wasn't somewhat better. Still give it a try - you may like it. 3.5 out of five
Disappointing July 5, 2008 Phoust (Kent, England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I approached this film with apprehension expecting the worst because this is Wong Kai-Wai's first English language film. I think my concerns were justified as this really is a terrible film from a great director. One has to wonder how much control Wong Kai-Wai had over the casting for the film: Jude Law, Norah Jones, Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz I can only describe as weak but to be fair that may have something to do with a poor script also. Why Wong worked with crime writer Lawrence Block is quite beyond me and secondly why he chose to use a script when all of his best work was improvised remains a mystery. The characters are hollow and the plot episodic. Another problem really is the cinematography by Darius Khondji (Delicatessen,1991; Seven,1995) which I found to be distracting and sugary. In no way does it enhance the film unlike the work of Wong Kai Wai's previous collaborator Christopher Doyle. Those who are unfimiliar with the work of Wong Kai-Wai would do better by watching "Chungking Express"(1994), "Happy Together"(1997) or "In The Mood For Love"(2000) first before watching this. Those who are fans already will probably watch this anyway, if not, well you're not missing much.
A Beautiful Love Story/Road Movie... June 16, 2008 L. Norris (southern England) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
...Marking Wong Kar Wai's english language debut and Norah Jones' acting debut, this is not an astounding movie but it is very close to it. Great performances from the whole cast, Rachel Weisz and David Strathairn really stand out. Fantastic cinematography from Darius Khondji, and an almost perfect soundtrack really set the mood. i highly recommend this movie for fans of Wong Kar Wai's other works and anyone looking for a visually stunning piece of mood cinema.
