Anybody whose faith in Lost was beginning to waiver will surely appreciate the fourth season of the show. For this is Lost firing on all cylinders, showing a willingness to answer a few more questions than usual, while not being afraid to deepen elements of the mystery of Ocean 815. The big new idea for Lost season four, as introduced in the cliffhanger at the end of the previous run, is flash-forwards, where we see some of the characters after they?ve left the island. This freshens the show immensely, and gives the writers some much-needed new meat to chew on. As a result, characters are more convincingly fleshed out, and more fun is had with the narrative in general. There are still a few of the ailments that have hindered Lost in the past. Whenever Matthew Fox?s Jack takes centre-stage, for instance, it still tends to be an episode to forget, while one or two sub-plots are allowed to meander a little more than they should. Yet it?s a transitionary season, moving the show towards its final two years by beginning to fill in some of the blanks we?ve been lacking. And with a cliffhanger at the end that, once more, has the potential to firmly pull the rug from under your feet, it?s very clear that Lost has plenty more tricks up its sleeve to come. someone has to tell amazon that lost season 4 has only (and disappointly)14 episodes and not 23 as is stated...

After a disappointing season 3, this fourth season finally sees Lost progress the story at a much faster and more exciting pace. I said in a previous review on season 3 that for every good episode there were usually a couple of duffers either side. This is most definitely not the case in season 4. Each episode adds something to the overall arc of the story. It feels far more focused and doesn't drift off into seemingly unrelated stories. Also, most of the back stories tie up directly with what is happening in the present which makes them even more exciting. This is the first season I have wanted to watch one episode after another without getting bored. There are so many twists and turns in each and every episode it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout which is something I didn't get as often with the other 3 seasons. Overall this is far and away the best season yet. There is a great cliff-hanger at the end which sets up season 5 to potentially be even better.

Oh dear. TV's finest thriller of a show in years is beginning to unravel. It was to be expected really. How long could the writers stretch out such a simple premise of plane crash survivors stranded on a strange island? They have done an excellent job of maintaining the mystery and intrigue surrounding the characters and the island itself but things just get silly in season 4.
In season 3 it emerged that there were that many people living on this tiny island, it was surprising that there wasn't an international airport. Apart from all the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 there were the remnants of the massive Dharma initiative living just around the corner in a town that conveniently no-one ever noticed on their numerous hikes around the island. The ex-Dharma employees are led by the enigmatic Benjamin Linus who may or may not be an evil genius. At the end of season 3 it appeared rescue was at hand but Charlie's dying words warned the survivors that all may not be as it seems and the people on the approaching ocean freighter were not coming to help them.
Season 4 is an confusing and endlessly drawn out affair which only asks more questions. It is revealed fairly early on which six characters make it off the island but the constant "are they coming to rescue us or kill us?" becomes pretty tiresome. John Locke takes half the camp with him and disappears into the forest and Jack stays behind with the other half. People wander all over the place and new characters arrive. There are numerous sojourns between the boat and the island and an old face returns to complicate matters further. I am still no clearer as to what happened to everyone who didn't make it off the island and how the writers will fill out season 5 but what I do know is that Lost has started to become too silly for words. We still don't know what the significance of the polar bears, the black smoke or Jacob's cabin are and more questions have been asked such as "Where is Claire?", "is Ben actually a good guy?" and "who cares?"
I really hope they wrap things up next season because I can't be bothered watching any more of this lunacy.

season 3 of lost was a bit of a hit and miss. it started off well enough, but got a bit dare i say it boring in the middle, then picked up again for a superb final 2 episodes. season 4 picks up the quality from there on in, and i can honestly say that this is the best season since season 1. the idea of using flashforwards instead of flashbacks is brilliant, and now at last, we are starting to get some answers. lost was in serious danger of becoming like the x files, went on for way too long, (and i am a massive x files fan)and getting so bogged down in its own mythology that even the writers had lost track and given up trying to sort it all out. but this season is classic lost, even though it's a shorter season due to the writer's strike. favourite character is now ben. i prefer him over the rather dull jack any day. just who's side is this guy actually on??!! and brace yourselves for an absolutely stunning series finale. brilliant.

Bar perhaps season 1, this season was by far the best. Although the American writers strike unfortunately left the show with fewer episodes than usual, it didn't affect the quality of the program, and the added twists of the flash forwards made this season brilliant.
I have to admit, even as a true Lost fan, after the end of season 3 the storyline failed a little and I was beginning to wonder if the show would be able to pick back up. However, it exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone.
