Amazon.com As preposterous action movies go, Jumper is pleasantly unpretentious and breezily entertaining. A young man named David (Hayden Christensen) discovers he has the power to teleport (or "jump") anywhere he can visualize. After using this power to steal and make a comfortable life for himself, he pursues the girl he longed for in school (Rachel Bilson, The O. C.). But as he does so, another jumper (Jamie Bell, Billy Elliot) and a pack of fanatical jumper-hunters called paladins (led by a white-haired Samuel L. Jackson) crashes into David's freewheeling life. Jumper wastes no time trying to explain how jumping works or delving into the hows and whys of the paladins; this is an alluring fantasy of power directed at a pell-mell pace by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go). There's a brief moment when it feels like the movie will bog down in romance and vague gestures towards character development--happily, that's the moment when Bell appears and the whole movie shifts into overdrive. You might wish that Bell and Christensen had swapped roles; Bell has a far more engaging personality, and Christensen's bland good looks might better suit a more aggressive character. Nonetheless, Jumper has oodles of dynamism and nifty visual effects to propel its comic-book storyline forward. A variety of recognizable actors in bit parts (such as Diane Lane and Kristen Stewart, Panic Room) suggest that the filmmakers are laying the groundwork for sequels. Based on a critically-acclaimed science-fiction novel by Steven Gould. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Realistic sci-fi? October 12, 2008 G. Fowler This is an exhilarating film! It`s sci-fi but with a real feel-No two dimensional goody two shoes characters,no ridiculous sets,or silly gadgets-Instead flawed people in real places who react realistically,so the story flows logically and in a credible manner.I really got immersed in this film-more than anything in a long time-enjoying the jumping rather than grinding my teeth at unnecessarily silly cartoonish situations.Maybe there`s no real heroes or villains, and maybe it doesn`t follow the formula, but this is a more adult approach to superhero fantasy film making. Please, let`s see a sequel!
A woolly jumper - full of holes. October 12, 2008 DangermouseZilla (Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can only imagine that having the ability to 'jump' to wherever you want to be in a split second is even more useful at the moment considering the price of fuel. If I could appear at the office when mere seconds before I was sat on the settee at home then it would make my life a lot easier. If you could transport yourself anywhere (well, anywhere you can visualise) then you'd have a lot of fun and 'travel' to some pretty fantastic places. And that is exactly what David does. But pretty soon he is involved in a centuries long war with the 'Paladins' - right-wing Christian nutters who consider the Jumpers to be a physical blasphemy, heretics, sticking two fingers up to the big man in the sky. It's here that the film falls a bit flat. The long history of the pseudo-religious war is mentioned once but never again explored. And given the phenomenal power of the Jumpers, they never seem to do the obvious thing and simply appear behind a Paladin to bop the one on the head. Hayden Christensen plays David, the lead character. But his performance is not convincing, not helped by the obvious corny romance, that and the contrast with the better performance of fellow 'Jumper' Jamie Bell. Even Samuel L Jackson fails to impress and is uninspiringly typecast as the black dude who comes out with the cool lines. In a nutshell: The special effects are no doubt very good. The actual teleporting is realised nicely on screen with a sense of the power involved (lots of bass to rumble the speakers, and a visual ripple of energy shakes all around it). There's also a great scene involving a double decker London bus appearing in the dessert. The effects along with the action make the film watchable, but they can't manage to salvage the movie from the realms of "average at best". The plot hinted at greater things, but they must have 'jumped' out of the final edit as they were nowhere to be found, and the ending felt sloppy with unanswered questions. Maybe the producers hoped this would spawn a new film franchise with David becoming a super-hero type. Maybe they thought they could acheive a glossier version of 'underworld'. Or maybe they just hoped that a medocre plot with shallow characters who are never really brought to life by the lifeless acting would sell enough to make it viable.
Why all the bad reviews?? October 9, 2008 M. G. Heath (Edinburgh) I dont get why so many people gave this such low ratings. Its a good and entertaining film and the guys powers are really cool. I think it was all good package with good action and it didnt have a story line that makes you go "that would never happen" (except for the jumping powers). I reccomend this to anyone that likes easy going action films.
Promises much but delivers little September 25, 2008 A reviewer called (London England) A young man discovers that he has the ability to teleport and uses his ability to rob banks and move from place to place in the wink of an eye.... I thought this film was going to be a great movie. The first half of the film promises to deliver the makings of a great film but sadly it fails to deliver anything significant and ends up with a lot of computer graphics coupled with plenty of crashes and bangs. For my money I would have preferred a more conceptual approach about the power he has and the threat he poses to the established order. Im sure that if anyone ever developed such talents they would be ruthlessly squashed or coerced in some way towards advancing the aims and intents of greedy businesses or corrupt governments. Instead we end up with a superficial film with a school kid feel to it. If they have sequel to this film - hopefully it will be better.
Disappointing September 21, 2008 Irikefe Okonedo (London, England) Sci-fi thriller about a young man who discovers that he has the ability to teleport instantly to anywhere on the planet and what he does with this ability, especially when he discovers that he is not the only one with this ability and that there are people out there who are sworn to kill `jumpers' like him. I found this to be an intriguing premise and the film was a fairly exciting ride with excellent special effects and Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson starring together in a film for the first time since Star Wars Episodes II and III. However the film was badly let down because by the end too many loose ends had been left untied, which is a real shame as this could easily have been a very good movie. (Maybe there will be a sequel?) Ultimately disappointing. (Note: this film also stars The O.C.'s Rachel Bilson as main character Hayden Christensen's love interest.)
