5 out of 5 stars Great sounding speakers   June 21, 2008
Mr. C. M. Webb (Surrey UK)
I have tried a few 2.1 speakers for my macbook pro and most have sounded tinny, so bad i even used the mac's own speakers. But then I tried the Philips MMS321 set up, they are a huge improvement despite lacking a subwoofer. The bass is clear and deep and the sound is so crystal my neighbours can hear them through the wall. The look compliments my Macbook Pro so they look great. Minor flaw is the huge power adaptor but thankfully I can hide that out of the way. If you want great sound they are worth the purchase, and for notebook owners I recommend them.

2 out of 5 stars Jack pin major downfall   May 23, 2008
Sue, Barnsley (South Yorks)
I purchased these speakers from PC world last year to provide sound for training sessions. They were easy to set up and provided a good quality sound in a room that seats 16 people- so far so good! Used about 30 times. However the lead needed to connect to the amplifier is built into one of the speakers and is a 9 pin. It is not easy to connect and therefore one pin has broken. Philips do not offer replacement parts. Therefore I've had to throw the whole set away. I won't be replacing them like for like but will look out for a more robust set. All for the sake of a pin!

4 out of 5 stars Good quality for a non 2:1 system - but watch the lack of headphone jack.   December 22, 2007

Hard to say how these rate. My previous speakers were Altec Lansing VS4121's, so they are my benchmark.

Despite what some say about the volume control on these speakers, it really isn't an issue, although as always, you could probably do without the blue neon glow from the volume control backlight if they are in your bedroom. That said, the control and light are mounted on the RHS of the right speaker so are easily covered. Likewise, the power unit is large, but not excessive and I couldn't imagine it causing a problem.

The big oversight is the lack of headphone jack and I think this is the single biggest drawback in these speakers. My computer setup means it is near impossible to unplug the connector from my sound card, but any time I need to listen through my headphones this is now what I must do. Consider how important headphone listening is to you before I buying, would be my advice.

As for sound quality, my Altec Lansing's were 2:1 with a large sub-woofer, so obviously the Philips set will never quite match them in that area. That said, the bass on these is impressive, but will slightly distort at higher volumes. As a result of the smaller bass throw, the sound quality from the Philips is relatively "tinnier" although I would say very good for a speaker of this size and really not bad at all.

I should also add, the entire reason for buying these speakers was my Altec Lansing set had far too much bass. Both myself (listening to electronica, classical, Radio 4, world music, Latin, Asian/Oriental folk and 60s/70's rock) and a mate (rock music mainly and a guitarist) with the same speakers found the Altec Lansing bass overpowering at anything above 30% in all these genres, with a noticeable hum when the bass was reduced to below this level. There is NO hum from the Philips set, which is good. Spoken word sounds pleasant on the Philips whereas the Altec Lansing's tended to sound like you were in a cinema - impressive but neither accurate nor pleasant at 7am.

All in all I am happy with these. The sound quality is maybe not as rich as the Altecs, but these are far more versatile over a wider range of listening and far more practical in both size and capacity. Radio 4 in the mornings used to shake me out of bed, now it awakes me gently, while my music collection still sounds great with maybe even crisper high end.

The main competition I could see for these was the Creative Gigaworks T40. Unfortunately I never got to try them, but would be intrigued to hear a comparison.

4 out of 5 stars Great value, great design   December 2, 2007
Chris (Cambs, UK)
These speakers are great value for money - they have a rich sound, and they look great. The bass is especially strong for such a small speaker, although perhaps a bit too strong at higher volumes - the only reason I've given 4 stars instead of 5. But at lower/mid volume they offer fantastic sound quality well beyond their price.

5 out of 5 stars A Quality Product   October 4, 2007

Excellent value those at PC World cost considerably more in my locality. The speaker design is tip-top and the sound superb. Philips integrated bass radiator design gives a smooth bass sound. It would have been helpful to know in advance from the seller: piximania-uk, that the adaptor had a two pin plug. The "quick start guide" has easy instructions for changing that to a three pin. This wasn't a problem for me, but it could faze some people. Apart from that one aspect, the speakers are a bargain. In terms of satisfaction, five stars for the quality of the product. The seller has four stars. I have no regrets making this purchase. Much thanks to Amazon.
