Heavyweight Contender! July 16, 2008 Shortymutant (London, UK) I'd been a happy user of the Shure earphones (E2C and SE210) for a couple of years. The Shure's are good 'phones, but are let down by component failures that demand a fresh purchase of the complete item. I almost purchased the more expensive Shure SE310's but decided to cast my net a little wider...and am glad that I did. I've been using the UE's for about a month and so far I'm really happy with this purchase. Initial apprehension about the effect of bass tuning/boosting disappeared almost from the first song. Fitting takes a bit of getting used to, but now my technique is spot on. These are really good mid level 'phones, which I now use happily daily in the gym with an iPod Shuffle and a couple of times a week with an iPod Touch. If you're looking for the next step up in class with bit of extra kick, you cannot go wrong.
What a stunning monitor earphones! July 2, 2008 R. S. Vanavisut (Scotland, United Kingdom) My Sony AWZ-A818 MP3 portable came with quite a decent sounding earphones, but upgrading it to the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro EB has been an awesome revelation to my ears! Indeed, I have tested it against my Beyer Dynamic 770 closed design Hi-Fi headphones, and I have no problem declaring the UE earphones a winner - especially at the bass end! Besides, the UE earphones are very efficient, so it means that I can play at lower volume - hence saving quite a bit of battery power. Great product and worth every penny. But my one minor grievance concerns its packaging, which is very cheap and poor for the the market it is aiming at!
Oh yes... June 26, 2008 Mr. Nigel Butterworth (Halesowen, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
..these are the boys. If, like me, you are the kind of person who almost always has the amplifier bass setting to maximum, then these will not disappoint. Like another reviewer said, the bass is not overpowering, just that it's for those folks who like a bit of extra bottom end on a clean sound. Highly recommended, superb sound. For info, I use them with a Creative Nomad Jukebox extra 130GB (upgraded from the original 30B) and I listen to tracks at WAV 44.1kHz.
Good but overpriced June 9, 2008 Speed-of-sound (United Kingdom) After reading the rave reviews here and elsewhere, I parted with my hard-earned cash for a set of super.fi 5 extended bass headphones. 94 for a set of in-ear headphones, I thought I must be mad, but the rave reviews told me otherwise, so I went for it and placed the order. So what are they like? The in-ear canal design is somewhat intimate to say the least. Not being familiar with this type of ear-canal design, I found this the strangest thing to get used to. However, after using them for a couple of days, i am slowly getting used to the sensation, and begining to find them quite comfortable. The increased isolation from background sounds also takes getting used to, as does the "Darth Vadar" breathing when the volume is down. But after the reviews, I expected mind-blowing quality, and in this respect I am a little dissapointed. The sound is open enough, but lacks extremley fine detail. Although I am a fan of dance and ambient music, I find the bass a little obtrusive for my liking. I wish I had gone for the "pro" version, without the extended bass. The trouble is that with these sort of headphones, you only get one chance to get it right, as you can hardly send them back once they have been copulating with your ears! Strangely, the overall effect does improve when the phones are cranked up a little, but I am loath to play them at this volume for long periods, for the sake of my hearing! (I play in a rock band, so am not overly timid about volume, but I do not want to become deaf!) Overall, I am a little disappointed with the super.fi 5's. Perhaps I expect too much, and expect the same hi-fi sound I get from my Quad 22L's at home, but then, for nearly 100 I feel entitled to expect a lot! Overall, good but seriously overpriced. For 50 I would have been fairly satisfied.
A revelation.. April 14, 2008 S. Barnard (London) Having just spent the best part of 95 on a set of these headphones i can offer little more praise than that of my fellow reviewers. Having tried all the other market leaders (shure, bose, sennheiser etc) I have now found the best. Sound quality at all ranges is stunning - simply stunning. You will hear your music like you have never heard it before. If you can afford the outlay do your ears, the music and the artists the justice they deserve. Five stars without doubt.
