5 out of 5 stars Klipsch Image   September 28, 2008

Hi all,

I represent Klipsch in the UK & Ireland and wanted to clarify that very few of the reviews posted here actually relate to the Klipsch Image earphone which has won a variety of best in class awards since their launch.
I've been a customer and supplier of Amazon for several years now and have seen and tested what many would term the top 5 best-in-class of in-ear audio.
I've never seen a better full range performance or total ease of use from any other and considering the Klipsch Image are about 20% of the bulk of standard dual driver units they represent a welcome achievement in audio engineering.
This product deserves relevant critical debate so just wanted to clarify on the posted reviews as many refer to the entry level Klipsch custom 1 which list at 49 pounds.

Many thanks
Tony Bergin

3 out of 5 stars Haven't worked for me i'm afraid   August 19, 2008

Hmmm. Well after several hours on Amazon going through almost every set of headphones, I eventually settled on the Custom 1's as i'm a sucker for good hi-fi and any audio device that promises something that rises above the crowd perks my interest.

I walk 5 miles a day (about 90 mins) to and from work so needed something comfortable and of above average audio quality. So far (1 week) i've been very dissapointed by the Custom 1's. I'm giving them every chance, trying another set of 'gels' each day (why are these 'gels' made out to be so special - just about all in-ear phones use similar rubber fittings now - i was expecting something truly revolutionary!)

Now it's entirely possible that none of the gels fit my ear, because i've got odd shaped ears. I've never had any luck with in-ears (hence reason i went for the Customs - they promised a good fit), but to be honest, even when i get a good seal (sound isolated, 'pop' when i remove them) they just sound... well average.

No matter how far i push these into my ears - and believe me they're currently almost touching my Cerebelum - the bass sounds boring, flat and lacking impact, and the mid-range gets tiring very very quickly. Granted the source is a mobile phone playing MP3's but the same source sounds better through the supplied phones and several others (yes i've made a few purchases..) and i've also tried the Klipsch plugged into my hi-fi amp with the same results.

The poor microphonics also should be mentioned ... I imagine this problem would be hardly noticeable if you're sitting on a bus or train, or on an excercise bike, but honestly, every footstep i take thumps through my head with a bass response the Klipsch drivers themselves can only dream of. Gave me a headache after a few minutes. Suely it's not safe to have this level of low freqency sound banging into your ear-canals every second or two?

On the plus side... yes there are some! These 'phones are VERY detailed at the top-end. Too detailed in fact for poorer sources - every click and digital artefact is laid bare and master-tape hiss is easily resolved. I normally love this level of detail, but it just doesn't compensate at all for the poor bass and over-all tiring sound. And yes ... i have to disagree with the consensus here and tell you that you can't forget you have these 'phones on, anymore than you can forget that there's an industrial hoover trying to suck your brain out.

When the 'seal' is created with my lug-holes I get the same pressurised feeling one gets when rapidly decending in an aircraft or entering a train tunnel at high speed. Not comfortable. Oh and if i laugh, smile or yawn, the seal is broken and the sound quality ruined.

Other plus points; the over-ear hooks ARE very comfortable, and the cloth cables and cable cinch are excellent design features, as is the wee case they come in, but I just can't live with these headphones despite those positives. I'm going to have to sell them on e-bay or similar and try to get some money back as i doubt Amazon would want used 'phones back. Oh and i paid 70 not the 50 some have said they paid, so even more dissapointed :-)

In summary; I'm sure if you have the right shape of ears these 'phones can be comfortable and can sound reasonable, but if you already have problems with in-ear phones fitting your ears, please be warned that there's a good chance these wont fit either. Try to beg, borrow or... borrow a pair to try before-hand. Not easy i know.

If anyone wants to buy these off me and take the risk at a lower price can i just say that i have very clean ears with no visible waxy build-up and these phones are as good as new !

1 out of 5 stars Awful!   August 17, 2008

Despite many attempts to get these to fit I couldn't move my head even a fraction of an inch without them falling out! As for Bass, forget it. It was like listening to a 45 played at 78 an a tin shed!

3 out of 5 stars Tons of bass but 'quirky' midrange!   August 5, 2008

I had these a few months ago and forgot to review them :)

I've noticed a lot of the reviews here are for the wrong model, so just to be clear - I'm reviewing the ones in the photo that cost 174 ( 240 when I bought them!) While the 3 stars might seem a bit harsh (because they're not bad by any means), I think they're waaay overpriced for what they are.

GOOD POINTS:

+ Really small and easy to fit with great isolation.

+ Fantastic bass depth and extension. I have yet to hear bass like this from any other earphone. If you love bass, these will really put a smile on your face.

+ The eargels Klipsch supply give a really good seal. They're oval, rather than round, and mould to the shape of your ears really well.

BAD POINTS:

- Microphonics: They're really bad. If I sat really still and didn't move, they were fine. But just moving my head aggravated the cable... and the noise... ouch! So bad I had to sell them, and I'm fairly tolerant of microphonics, but this was just too much.

- Midrange: I found there was a real quirk with the vocals. They're very very forward and extremely warm. The problem I had was that the vocals on about 50% of my music were so 'in my head' that I wanted to scream!

Example: Steve Miller's "Abracadabra" sounds 'normal' on my speakers, and
'normal' through my Triple. Fi 10 Pro and Denon C700, but through the Image, the vocals were playing in my brain. It was unbearable.

There seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to which tracks were affected, it was very random and quite startling when it happened. I'd have to take them out, it was that bad. And yet for the other 50% of my music, the vocals were fine (too warm for me), but not 'in the head' at all.

If I only listened to instrumental, it might have been different, but I listen to a lot of vocals, and that was a real dealbreaker for me

If Klipsch bought out a similar version with a more neutral midrange and a less microphonic cable, I would certainly want to try them again!

I loved how small and unobtrusive they were, and the seal was so good I could barely hear anything when they were in. And the bass... ohhhhh :)

But the quirky vocals and noisy cable meant they had to go back :(

3 out of 5 stars I don't seem to be as impressed as everyone else   July 30, 2008

I bought these on a whim when they were reduced, mainly for the promise of acoustic isolation. I listen to a lot of 'spoken word' on my iPod while I walk and miss bits when cars and lorries go by

The headphones arrived in a shoebox sized parcel which I thought a little over the top. They were nicely presented when I finally got through all the plastic to them

They have a very good finish and look well worth the money. The noise proofing is good. The different sized fitting worked well

The midrange and treble are very clear and smooth. The only down side is the very weedy bass response. I don't demand a lot of bass - my HiFi has 15 watts of valve power on electrostatic speakers - but these little 'phones sound more like those nasty white 'earplugs' from the seventies

Overall, I was glad I only paid half price. I think they are worth about 30 performance wise
