A satisfying gadget December 28, 2007 doublegone (scotland) I bought one of these hi-tech stoves to use on fishing trips, largely to make tea fresh as I hate it out of a flask. I have been extremely impressed with it on the whole. It heats liquids really fast. Water is at a rolling boil in just a couple of minutes. You have to be careful to stir soup or it will burn onto the bottom. You can buy an attachment which would allow you to put a normal pan on the stove for frying etc. The secret of its speed seems to be the arrangement of metal flanges on the base of the cup, which present the maximum area to the flame. The clever metal that it is all made out of, and the heatproof sleeve means that shortly after boiling your water in the cup you can be drinking your tea out of it. There is no problem holding the cup once detached from the stove, or burning your mouth on it. You can buy an extra cup so that two people can use the stove for drinks, but its just as easy to pour into normal cups from your Jetboil one if you don't want to spend the cash. I like the way that all the bits - the fuel can, stand and burner all fit inside the cup itself making it a good saver of packspace. One criticism I have is that the self-lighting sparker is not at all reliable. You need to have a lighter or some matches with you. But other than that I am very pleased with my Jetboil. It is quite expensive compared to other systems like the Pocket Rocket, but I would say that if you largely want to heat liquids for hot drinks or rehydrating noodles and dried foods, then the Jetboil will suit you well.
excellent, but let down by piezo breakage September 27, 2007 bodrick (London) This is a great bit of kit. Very fast and efficient for cooking pasta or making tea etc. Also very efficient on space in your backpack too. Only let down by the piezo-electric lighter which has repeatedly broken on my model (others have reported the same problem). So if you decide to climb mount everest with only a jetboil, dont forget your matches! Some have reported that it doesn't work very well at low temperatures - but then i think that's probably a problem with any butane/propane system.
