Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Republic of Ireland's national team was brought into existence in 1926 by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), based in Dublin. Because there was already a football team claiming to represent all of Ireland, The Republic of Ireland's team was not recognised by the Home Nations (the rest of the UK) initially and looked to FIFA teams from mainland Europe for competition. It wasn't until 1950 that the boundaries for the two football teams were finally decided upon and the FAI's team became officially known as the Republic of Ireland'. Involved in international competitions since the 1930's, the team first qualified for an international tournament in Germany for Euro 88, just missing out on the semi-finals on goal difference. The team's more recent history has seen them reach the quarter finals of the 1990 World Cup, with Jack Charlton as manager, the second round of the 1994 World Cup in the USA and the second round of the 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea.
