Permanently greasy! February 14, 2008 kayjay (london) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this mat for years and have been practising yoga for years. I have washed it, waited for it to lose the slippery feel and nothing. At first I told myself "it is good, it just makes your practise more challenging as your poses are widened" Fact is I got sick of slipping. This mat is terrible. Steer clear. You would expect so much more from Reebok...*sigh*
Reebok yoga set February 1, 2008 Lola Rosa 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently took up yoga and decided to get serious about it, so I went and bought this yoga set. I assumed the most expensive set would be the best. I was wrong!! Its far too slippy and has too smooth a surface, even when I read the booklet and washed any oils off it, the second my feet started sweating I couldnt hold my pose. My advise, look for a mat with a textured surface that will give a bit of friction! The block, strap and bag are good but I didnt buy it primarly for the accessories.
Elbow Grease July 22, 2007 Bunkey (Minnesota, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had the same problem Chris Yoga had, only during the cool of the morning. My feet kept sweating and slipping during the warrior poses and downward dog. So I took his advice and I scrubbed my mat for 20 minutes with hot water, dish soap, and a stiff brush. I rinsed it off with more hot water, and hung it up for 2 days. I used it around noon today and it was about 80 degrees outside and I don't have air conditioning. My feet stayed solid on the mat even though they were sweating. Other than that, I really enjoy using the foam block that comes in the set. Very nice for forward fold at 6:00 in the morning. So, if you purchase this product, save yourself the frustration and scrub the mat right away when you get it.
Too slippery to be used in hot weather December 18, 2006 Chris Yoga (Hereford, UK) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I bought this set last summer because the 5 mat I had bought three years ago was breaking up under the strain of my daily practise. The first thing I noticed was that the mat was too slippery to allow me to hold many of the postures. On checking the instructions, I read that this is caused by a "lubricant", designed to prevent the mat from drying up in storage. The instructions told me to wash it in soap and water. I did this in the bath and the mat was still too slippery! I took the mat out on to our lawn and scrubbed it with hot detergent and a stiff brush for 15 minutes. Once rinsed and dried, the mat was able to function almost as well as my old, 5 mat, so long as it is dry. Once I start sweating, the surface becomes slippery again and I need to suspend my practise and use my towel to dry it and my feet and hands, before it is safe to continue. Given the advances in materials sciences in recent years, it is difficult to understand how a large company such as Reebok cannot find a material that provides enough friction to allow you to use it as a yoga mat, even when you start to sweat. My old, 5 mat managed this trick, partly by having large stipples on the surface. The texture of the Reebok mat is really quite smooth in comparison. On the positive side, I now know when I am starting to warm up. As I rest in downward dog, I feel my feet moving away from me at a glacial pace. On the negative side, a vigorous practise in the hot weather makes the mat dangerously slippery. I am looking out for a 5 replacement before next summer.
A great all-inclusive kit May 19, 2006 Beanie (Sussex) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
The kit includes all you need to take part in yoga. It's a matching set in a gunmetal grey colour which is very trendy, and the bag is plenty big enough to fit the mat and block in without any trouble. The only reason I awarded 4 stars instead of 5 is because the block is slightly narrower and shorter than the blocks we have used in our yoga class - but it's still perfectly adequate for the purpose.
