Excellent but ... February 10, 2008 M. Conder 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I agree with the other reviewers about the excellence of this GPS. However, it does not come into its own without upgrading from the basemap. My gripe is that the better maps are ridiculously expensive. I can buy a GPS for road (ie in car) use for less than 100 complete with street level mapping of the UK. Why should the cost of a map alone for the HCx be more than that? Could it be that there is little or no competition in this field?
Superb Navigation unit September 24, 2007 Mr. Paul Alderson (Leeds, UK) 24 out of 25 found this review helpful
I purchased this product, and at first, struggled to make sense of downloading routes onto it for your use - would definitely recommend to get memory-map 1:25,000 scale maps, as these are very detailed (even though they don't seem to come with a manual!) However, now that I have finally worked it out, it's simply brilliant - as well as downloading routes, it keeps record of your tracks, and allows you to turn these into routes if you choose to do so. The on-screen menus are very easy to use, even if you've never used a gadget like this before. When I was deciding to buy this item, I also considered the High-Sensitivity 'HCx' version, but unless you're going underground, I cannot see any benefit to paying the extra money, as this unit is perfectly capable of excellent results, pretty much wherever you are. NB: Don't forget to change the Datum settings to OS GB if you are in the UK, as it automatically defaults to WGS84, so you will need to do this if you are using OS Maps. Again, superfast delivery from Amazon, as always - well done!
Everything you'll ever need for your outdoor pursuits. July 23, 2007 Alan L. Ramsay (Scotland, U.K.) 51 out of 54 found this review helpful
Having owned this for around 5 months now, I can honestly say it's the best purchase I've ever made. Although I enjoy outdoor pursuits, I have no sense of direction whatsoever. With this little box of tricks, I can relax, safe in the knowledege that I really will be able to find my way back to the car, no matter where I roam. I have to say that the mapsource maps are essential though, since the basemap is too basic for serious navigation. I have the city navigator maps for the whole of Europe installed on a 2GB Micro SD card, but you can also purchase topo maps for the uk too. I bought my mapsource cd's from a well known internet auction site, and saved a fortune. Well worth considering. With the mapsource maps installed, you can get turn by turn routing to your destination. Although there's no voice direction, it does bleep, and highlight the next turn with a close up of what's required, so you can use it in the car too. I didn't bother with the official car mount, but instead used a couple of velcro sticky squares from B&Q, saving about 20. The unit has so many functions, you'll never use it to its full capacity, but it's very reliable, and well made. I use it everyday, whether it's to find my way about the city, or on top of a mountain. The Barometric altimeter is useful for knowing just how far you have to go during your climb, and the waypoints facility allows you to return to your safe route back down, even in zero visibility. The list of points of interest contained on the mapsource maps are impressive to say the least. Whenever I visit new towns or cities, I have an amazing list of every type of business and service that I could ever need, including the phone numbers. Overall, if you want the best recreational gps on the market, this is the one for you.
