Good, but disappointing build quality January 31, 2008 The Fonz (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My first impression as I opened the box was "mmm this all seems a little cheap" - not the best feeling when the phone demands a selling price on the verge of 100. I was fortunate to buy this in a sale from another source at half price (the sale has now ended). None-the-less I must admit I was a little worried as I setup the light `plasticy' phone and base unit. Once the batteries were added to the phone, together with the rear cover, the phone had a bit more weight to it and felt more solid. The LCD screen looks dated in terms of a clearly evident colour inconsistency, resolution is also low and could be compared to the early colour screen mobile phones that arrived years ago. But the screen is functional and at the end of the day it's a phone and not a TV. The main disappointment is the rubber feeling buttons on the handset, these feel cheap and the down button doesn't always work first time when pressed. The ring tones are also very poor. All in all, I expected a higher build quality for a home phone with a 100 price tag. The base unit was easy to setup, with cables to connect to my router and phone line included. I set up my VOIP account within seconds and made my first internet call without using my PC. The call was very clear without a noticeable delay, walking around the house the quality of signal did not deteriorate and I was very impressed with how the system functioned. One problem though, the base unit had decided to take the same ip address as my pc and disabled my wireless internet connection. I used the phone unit to change the base unit's ip address to a different static address. While those new to computers may not understand what all this means; if you have similar problems, navigate to the ip section, change it to static and change the end number to something else, e.g. 002 to 005. Once I changed this, my Windows XP based pc connected back to the wireless network. My Vista based laptop was unaffected by this problem. OK, bit of a long review - but VOIP home phones are still a relatively new concept and I hope this helps people. Summary: - Slightly disappointing build quality - Works superbly - Would recommend, but think the price should be slashed by half.
Fantastic IP phone with support for multiple SIP providers January 11, 2008 Iridium Eyes (London, England) I have spent quite some time looking for a phone that would allow me to use different SIP provider at the same time so that I can be reachable on multiple numbers. This phone allow you to have up to 6 SIP providers configured an active at the same time on the phone plus the one preconfigured out of the box Gigaset account that you can use to contact other Gigaset phone users. The quality of the voice depend on the bandwidth available and it can be exceptionally good. The base have a web interface that you can use to configure your phone and upgrading the firmware is easy as pressing a button. Siemens offer a very good service fixing bugs and adding more services to the phone on each firmware upgrade. I could not ask more from an IP phone, I have not found a defect yet after two weeks of use.
And where's the VOIP? December 22, 2007 The Quibbler (Oxford) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Odd phone. Great DECT, love the ability to pick up my emails and impressive connective abilities to pick up firmware improvements BUT.....the VOIP doesn't work. I've had two of these over the past few months and they've never registered with my VOIP provider. Under those circumstances it is an expensive DECT phone rather than a good value DECT/VOIP system. Plus the Siemens tech support is very poor.
