Product Description Solwise Description: Solwise V500-DS IP Telephone - DECT, PSTN, Skype. No PC required for Skype calls. The V500DS is a stand-alone Skype DECT phone that allows users to access both the PSTN and Skype network. The PC-Less Skype DECT is implemented with embedded Skype software, which incorporates Skype features such as Voicemail, call forwarding and Skype-In/Skype-Out services. There is no need to have the Skype application running on a PC (No PC is required to make Skype calls). Once the base station is connected to the Internet, the handset will become an embedded Skype device, and the user can make Skype-to-Skype calls, or Skype In/Out calls with fixed-line numbers (Skype chargeable service). The Skype user contact list is shown on a 1.5 colour handset screen. The users can easily see their contacts status and profiles, as well as their Skype credit balances for SkypeOut. New users can be added on the handset. There are separate call lists for both the PSTN and Skype Calls, and the users can easily identity the call lists as either from PSTN or Skype. The phone has speakerphone, keypad backlight and polyphonic ring tones as standard features. There is also a headset option. . Full specs at www.solwise.co.uk

Poor November 7, 2008 Wee Crumb I was eager to try out this phone after waiting a week for the "next day before 3pm" delivery and first impression was of a neat wee device, no problem to set up. But it went downhill from there. The base station had an annoying buzzing sound at all times. The speaker also had a background noise which interfered and prevented me hearing the other party properly. However they did say that they could hear me fine. But Skype call quality was appalling and after a few tries I sent the phone straight back. Hanging up the aztech skype call and using skype on a PC (connected to the same broadband router) gave perfect sound quality so I blame the phone. I know skype can have its ups and downs but my tests did suggest that the phone is rubbish. And strangely the landline part of the phone seemed an afterthought, especially with regard to things like the contact list.
Lovely little phone September 29, 2008 Robin (London) First to begin I must say Solwise are very good to buy from. I placed my order and was given an estimate to when would be delivered. Seeing as I had placed the order on a Sunday I was expecting it to take sometime to be processed and dispatched. I was wrong, on the Monday I got an email saying the goods had been processed and with it a courier tracking number. I went to the courier (Interlink) and found my package to have already been collected and would be delivered by 3pm Tuesday. Just after 1pm I took delivery. Brilliant! The items came well packaged, I had purchased two one for me and a friend for us to stay in touch for free using Skype and not be tied to a computer. I took some time in looking into various Voip phones that did not need to have a computer running for them to work, and whilst prices varied the general specs did not. The phone it's self is small, smaller than many home DECT phones. In fact has the look that it may be based somewhat on an old Nokia mobile phone design. One out the box, simple charge the supplied 750mAh AAA batteries and you are ready to go. The kit comes with the phone, base station (which is the charger for the phone and which has to be plugged into your Broadband router) a belt clip, Network cable, normal telephone cable and corded hands free. Setting it up was a breeze. Some have said how to toggle between upper and lower case to enter their Skype username was a hassle. I found no trouble with this. You enter your username and password and it will sign you into your Skype account, download all your contacts and be ready to go. The colour display is bright and clear and allows you to see your status (online, away etc) and your SkypeOut balance. Making calls is simple. If a number is not in the contacts, one must enter it as country code then area code eg +44 208 then the number. Some phone do not allow this and all Skype numbers must be contacts. You can have the phone only make landline calls, or Skype or allow you to choose which to use upon placing the call. Sound quality. All I can say is that I have two different DECT phones in my house. One made by Philips, the other BT branded. For making a landlien call the Solwise phone is just as clear as the phones I already own. As for Skype calls, yes there is a difference but ever so slight. All I can say is there is a slight background 'hiss' which there is not when using it as a landline phone. But the persons voice is clear, and been told by people I have called they have no idea I am using Skype to place the call. You can manage contacts, set up call diverts, get and set up your voice maild with Skype choose who can contact you through Skype or, if you have it, SkypeIn number all from the handset. My only gripes are with the build quailty of the plastics. They feel very smooth and in only a few days putting the phone in the charger base, the back of the phone (where it rests in the base) has become worn (not so much scratched) but clearly where the two plastics meet each other. The buttons, whilst responsive do feel a little 'cheap' and clicky in use. Other than that however I can't fault the phone. I must just add the phone can only be set up to use Skype, so if you happen to use another service, for example in the UK Tesco Internet Phone this is not for you. In conclusion, if you are new to using Voip and want a duel landline DECT and Skype phone which can be used when away from the computer this is a great item to start you off with. Sure some other brands will be built a little better, and have a seperate hub to plug your network cables into your router, but it is not a problem as my router is next to my phone socket so can sit happy there. Good price, fast delivery, and in use a good quaulity phone with nice sound can't be bad. My advice? Buy this today.
Skype Dect Phone August 25, 2008 Schockwave This phone works well with skype, but you may find it easier to add contacts online and then allow your skype phone to download them to your phone, including landine numbers, when you want to save them with the person's name. It is just a pity that other voip suppliers, such as voip cheap cannot be added. The great thing is, that you do not need skype to run on your computer, but if you do decide to use the software, then you cannot use the phone, it is either one or the other. Solwise were very helpful when I had to ring them up, their customer service is excellent.
Good but fiddly March 2, 2008 T. Grundey (Scotland) This phone works well with good sound on landlines, Skype & Skype out.Range is good through solid walls. It looks a bit cheap but buttons are responsive. I found it quite difficult to enter my Skype password needing 3 tries, the a/A* button to toggle between upper & lower case did not respond properly but this is not needed again. Its probablly best to set up contacts via PC rather than handset,it will pick up your existing contacts.
