Things I would want to know BEFORE I bought the Nuvi 310 May 22, 2008 retailtherapycathy (Wiltshire) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Pros * Long Battery life * Has a Bluetooth connection, Audio book, MP3 and you can purchase add ons like the traffic management aerial/European maps and the maps and firmware are upgradeable. * It has a detour button so if you suddenly find the road blocked it will navigate a different route Cons * The biggest problem for me is that it doesn't have a "direction arrow window" of the up coming turn, so you have to follow the white arrow (wherever it is on the map), my old Route 66 was so reliable it could guide me by the voice instructions alone, just glance down if I missed an instruction and check the handy direction arrow for next turn arrow in the left hand corner of the screen - not with Nuvi - I find I have to concentrate on the sat nav screen a lot more. * Volume needs to be on full before you can hear it (my car is fairly quiet but still can hardly hear it) - its not just me being deaf either - friends have commented when I used it in their cars. There's no volume button on the side - you have to go into settings to find the volume - just leave it on high! * It tells you to turn right about 3 mins before you need to, so with several right turns coming up you can easily take the wrong one. * I do not find the search facility very good - it doesn't always know where some villages/roads are, you have to go to "map" where you can clearly see the village/road and you then have to point the Nuvi to it, (means you have to know where it is on the map and tell Nuvi! - which defeats the object a bit) this is strange, if its on the map it should be able to search for it! Same thing with Points of interest there aren't many and most are obscure - I ended up downloading a POI database and that seems a bit better. * It will not take me on the same route twice and insists on going down busy A roads rather than the motorway a lot of the time, even though I asked for the fastest route. I have tried different combination of settings and its just as inconsistent on all of them. It will recalculate if you ignore the crazy route and carry on - which is what I normally do. * You have a time of destination, which always add time on towards the end of the journey! - even if I am driving at max speed allowed for the road, I always arrive later than it predicted at the start (no comments please!). * When you first set off it will not give you voice instructions and the typical text instruction will say West on High Street - Being the typical female I don't know my west from my elbow - why doesn't it just say left or right???? I bought it to replace Route 66 on my phone and I am getting used to the Nuvi's eccentricities and can navigate with it now, but I have to check the map before I go anywhere new, just to be on the safe side. Or I just go back to the trusty Route 66.

Im a little bit of a gadget phobic, however, as my work involves a great deal of travel I needed a SAT NAV. I went for this one after looking at reviews and found it : THICKIE PROOF even I can tap in an address and postcode with this system and the hands free mobile connection is really easy to use. Large screen, easy assembly took me about 5 mins, also if you need to record where you have arrived its simple and saves the journey in its memory. I love it and would not be without it highly recommended.
Nearly but not quite April 10, 2008 Pizza (Guernsey, Channel Islands) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this unit for about a year now and used it around Guernsey and for forays to the UK. At home it has some strange ideas about the quickest route but will happily recalculate if you decide against going down any particular lane. Like any sat nav, you do need to keep your common sense switched on. No other complaints and in the UK it has been a real asset. It doesn't get 5 stars because the windscreen attachment has started to fail, usually at the most awkward time possible, and despite trying to make sure it is firmly attached in the first place. The cure is to spend a little more money and buy a Nuvi Series, StreetPilot c5XX Series which despite its name is a mount. Highly recommended!
A disappointment March 12, 2008 Deb H (Somerset UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having had this unit for 10 months I've gone back to working out my route in a map book and using the Garmin only as a means of seeing where my next turn is coming up. I downloaded the trial speed camera software and didn't bother to take up the regular subscription because it misses so many fixed speed cameras. However, the absolute best was that it couldn't find a main road full of Victorian houses, so either they mapped the area prior to 1837 or their accuracy leaves much to be desired.
