4 out of 5 stars So far so good   April 29, 2008

I spent a few weeks deciding what pda to get.In the end i got the palm TX.lots of good reviews and bad ones but the good out stripped the bad.
Well I have had for about a week, and its working well.I must say when I first had it it proved a little hard to use,but with a little time and effort and following the instructions it is pretty good, and am getting more and more out of it.
The only thing I would say is that it is not easy getting online,I dont need to but it would be nice to,so will keep playing around with the wifi totry and hook up.The Calender/Diary set up is great thats the main use of mine.I have not used all the functions, but in time I will re-review it and in a month or so will up date this.So far its a good little device, and it is fast replacing my big hard back paper diary.

1 out of 5 stars Palm TX build faults   April 16, 2008

Before deciding to purchase a Palm TX, you would be well advised to type "Palm TX digitizer problem" into Google. You will discover a very common build quality problem with this device. The problem is that at some time between 2 months and 10 months of use, the touchscreen will fail. Attempts to carry out a soft reset of the device results in an endless loop with the touchscreen program, which can only be exited by pressing the "home" button. A hard reset results in the same endless loop, but this time it cannot be escaped from. Several commentators on the web advise that in addition to the known digitizer problem, there are also software issues which cause this endless loop. This is a great shame, because the predecessor to this device, the Palm T5 is an excellent tool, I have used one for 3-years with no issues. I attempted to upgrade to the Palm TX to obtain the additional benefit of Wi-fi. I would advise anyone considering the Palm TX to research these issues prior to spending 170- 200 on this device. Whilst Amazon are absolutely excellent with their after sales support, do you really want the hassle of a well specified device that will certainly pack up on you? Once out of warranty, a replacement digitiser for the Palm TX costs circa 30 for a reconditioned unit, and circa 55 for a new one. For that you have to fit it yourself. Sending your device away for repair adds postage and labour costs.
Palm appear to have skimped on build quality with the TX in order to keep the price down. Not much use if it doesn't work though! Please don't just take my advice, do your research first, then walk away from the TX.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed   April 14, 2008

I have had this product for just under a year, and it has developed two faults: 1) The power on/off button has stopped working, and 2) An area of the 'touch' screen no longer responds to touch. Palm are currently refusing to accept my Amazon invoice as proof of purchase (despite it having my credit card/payment details on it!), and with the warranty running out on 19th April I am unlikely to get these faults resolved. Palm have currently quoted me 120 JUST to fix the power on/off button! This is the second Palm TX I have had - the first one just stopped working completely soon after I purchased it, but Amazon were brilliant and replaced it on that occasion (thanks Amazon!). It's a good unit generally, but these reliability issues and hassle with the manufacturer over getting it fixed under warranty lead me to give it one star - I would NOT recommend this product!
[Update 28/05/08]
Palm did repair my TX under warranty in the end, but it was a very painful process. Their service department took up to 2 weeks to reply to my emails, and I was without my TX for 3 weeks while it was being fixed.

3 out of 5 stars Palm TX touchscreen problems   March 24, 2008
Rev. Pamela Crane

I bought a Palm TX in August 2006 while on holiday, and had to return it for a replacement as it suffered from repeated lock-ups and reset cycling. The replacement still had a few glitches, but removing some legacy software and updating some key programs largely sorted them. However, it is now March 2008, the machine only 18 months old, and the digital screen input had started to play up - I had to place the stylus above the desired letter on the virtual keyboard rather than right on it for the letter to display onscreen, etc. I had a look on this Amazon page to see if any other owners had had problems - and there are so many of you! I had one last go at re-calibrating the touchscreen and the whole thing siezed up permanently. Now I can only read my documents, contacts, memos via the navigator, and half the notepad area is inaccessible, as I can't remove the keyboard/input area at the bottom of the screen. Many key files I can't open, as they depend totally on the stylus. So basically I am sunk, and about to revive my old Tungsten T3 till I decide what to buy next. It has to be a Palm machine with Palm OS, as one favourite program only runs on this, is not available for Windows Mobile - and also I love the economy and stability of the Palm platform. The TX, after all the hype, and despite its obvious versatility and high spec, is now a huge disappointment. PALM, please note! Of course there is no way to email this complaint to Palm, so it'll have to be snail-mail. Buyer beware.
And here is part 2 of this review!... after writing the above I started the long slog of reinstalling all my stuff to the old T3. This meant a final hotsync of the frozen TX so that I had all the necessary backups. Next, to clear my details from the useless lump I was about to throw away (where???) I did a hard reset of the TX. Imagine my surprise when the whole thing burst back to life! So, all you folks who have had these touchscreen problems like me, do the Hotsync backup and the hard reset and see if you also get your TX back. Having said this, at least one vital database failed to transfer to the Palm Desktop backup, and because I had forgotten to install Docs To Go on the PC I lost quite a lot of writing - so take care, in advance, not to share this sorry experience!
However, I am back with the T3, as it is so much sweeter and more responsive despite its volatile memory, and soonish I shall buy it a nice new battery (and some screwdrivers..). The TX will be re-filled with favourite apps and docs and left in a drawer for emergencies. If it dies in there, too bad. By then I may have a Treo 680.

it is only a month old, but after i ditched my pocket pc hpipaq 6340, i find wifi on this machine to be just brilliant...no major configuration needed, just latches onto my motorola straight way and i am in business...bye bye windows, despite me using my oulook big time, which is still workable reasonably....

had problems syncing documents to go , as it would freeze. downloaded outlook 2007 conduit from palm website, reinstalled the software twice over and finally it worked!!! by itself...cant take credit for sorting that out ...palm help online chat brilliant, but did not sort problem...

earphone hearing of mp3: crap ; noisy, dont buy if that is a hugeentertainment life of yours; but maybe your piece is better than mine!

wifi and blue tooth just great...not a huge webuser, but if i need to text or search google anywhere or see emails..brilliant...i have other more satisfactory methods to read webpages, trust me!!and i would not take away points on that account for this lovely, low weight, stylish, gadget which can do landscape reading and yet stay simple..i really hope it lasts fault free
