early teething problems - time will tell - 3 star at moment August 1, 2008 almadina 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
As usual great service from Amazon - ordered Wedneday night & delivered Friday morning! Really disappointed that front deralleur is not shimano as the picture - really lets the whole package down really - took a lot of fiddling to get working properly and not confident how long it will last. Possible problem with LH crank coming loose and even falling off! Have tightened it and hope it's a teething problem otherwise a visit to a Raleigh shop will be in order. Apart from these 2 niggles - happy with it unless they continue to irritate. Had the picture not shown a front Shimano deralleur wouldnt have bought it though! Hate cheapo components!!! When I complained to Amazon got 20 refund no problems so cant say fairer than that!
Disappointing, even at this price. August 1, 2008 GH (London) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Knowing this was designed by Raleigh, I had hoped for a better quality bike. However, aside from the Shimano back gears, every other component is low budget and the quality of engineering is definitely at the economy end of the scale. One thing that is particularly bad is the front derailleur. The picture on Amazon (if you zoom in) clearly shows a Shimano derailleur. But it isn't. It is a cheap Chinese part made by Falcon and it is the sloppiest piece of tat imaginable. More of a chain rattler than a derailleur, it never reliably finds the highest chainring despite every possible adjustment. Also it is impossible to mount it in the correct position, just above the outer chainring, because the chain cage is too long and fouls the frame. It looks as though it is designed to accommodate a 48T chainring, but this bike is 42T. In the course of messing with the gears, the left hand microshifter (another budget component) went snap and wouldn't hold position. On dismantling it I found the main components were made of hard, brittle plastic so I don't think this was ever going to last long. For all the time and money I've spent making this bike decent, I wish I had spent 50 more and bought a better bike from a proper bike shop where you can see what you're getting and take it back if there is trouble.
