A Bit of a disaster! January 4, 2008 Mrs. K. Wheeler (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like previous reviewer my Son had this for Christmas, he is 11 and found it hard as boat just kept collapsing. The box states '7-10: I can do it myself' which is a bit of a joke. I helped and finally we built the main boat but loads of other bits over, really need to sell just a pack of the magnetic balls to complete all the pirates and rowing boats, but can't seem to buy them anywhere.
not for playing with December 30, 2007 mum's the word (Sussex, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
my 4 year old received this for christmas. the kit consists of 140 pieces either magnetic balls with slots or flat pieces which slot into the balls and have very nice graphics printed on them. thie idea is that using the slots or magnets or a combination you can make 3d models to have fun with. this particular kit contains the pieces to make a pirate ship about 20cm in length OR some rowing boats/pirates. We have just had a go at putting this togetehr and i was very disappointed. Firstly the box states that 4-7 yr olds may need some help with it and above that could do it alone. well i'm in my late 30's and really struggled as you only have to move it slightly and the whole thing falls apart (rather like the old film comedy trick of a shed collapsing with all 4 sides going plop, plop, plop, plop!). it really is very delicate and the pieces need aligning very carefully. so you need to be pretty dextrous to get it to work (or have 2 pairs of hands!). one piece was missing from the box (not a vital piece, but missing none the less. the second problem was that once the pirate ship is made you have lots of spare flat pieces to make the pirates and rowing boats but no balls left so you have a boat that can only be looked at and cannot make the accessories to play any sort of role play etc. the final problem was the quality. at first sight this looks very good with really nice clear images printed on the flat pieces, but on closer inspection the acuracy of the printing/cutting of the pieces is not good, several of the pirates faces were blank and some of the images had peeled off their foam backing. my husband was silly enough to touch the ship and of course it collapsed so i had a go at making some of the pirates which was quite good fun and my 4 year old was also able to have a go. in summary i would say that it looks a lot better than it is and although some of the smaller items may be better and more "playable" a model this size is very tricky to make and then impossible to play with.
