5 out of 5 stars Another piece of Stephen King perfection   March 3, 2008

First the brilliant Shawshank Redemption (The best film of all time in my opinion) and now this, yet another masterpiece of storytelling and proof that Stephen King really is one of the greatest writers of all time.

I have yet to read to the book but it is clear from the outset that The Green Mile is an extremely good adaptation. Like the aforementioned Shawshank, few other films get you to feel so strongly about the characters, from the horrific execution of Del to the friendhsip between Paul and his fellow prison guards.

The film deals strongly with the themes of morality and death and both are treated in an extremely thought-provoking and intelligent way. Another thing i like about the film is that so intense is the realism created by how naturally the actors slip into their roles and the setting that the introduction of John's 'power' almost comes as a shock but as you realise it's potential it only adds yet more depth and power to the film.

It goes without saying that fans of Shawshank well find a lot to enjoy in this film, if they so choose to take the film in a positive light. The Green Mile is just as, if not more so accesible and their lies much of its strength. Don't let its length put you off (it's so long you even have to switch discs halfway through!), it is this length which is essential to convey the story in full detail and personally i enjoy it being so long as it creates a world so rich in its characters and feelings you almost don't want to leave when the film ends.

Another film you could compare the Green Mile to is Let Him Have It, also dealing with execution. I think the way this ultimate penalty hangs over the story throughout serves as a reminder of the darker side to the world and only emphasises the simple pleasures such as Del playing with Mr. Jingles. It's a film that'll make you laugh, make you cry, make you think. But above all, it is a truly great film.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Mouseville   January 19, 2008

This is a fantastic film and one that deserves at least one viewing. It tells the story of Paul Edgecombe, a former prison warden on death row, who narrates his life story to his lady friend Elaine one rainy day at their retirement home.

I won't go into the plot as others have pretty much summed it up for you. Suffice to say though that this is a wonderfully told story and it's true to the book 100%. (I was one of those who was lucky enough to read it in 1996 when King released a volume each month for six months. You had to wait to see what was going to happen next and it was GREAT!)

There are too many highlights to pick from but Sam Rockwell stands out well in the comedy department. All the actors are fantastic and gel well. If memory serves me correctly, Michael Clarke Duncan was nominated for an oscar for his role as John Coffey, and it's well deserved. All the actors performances are excellent but I want to pay a special tribute to Doug Hutchison who plays Percy Whetmore. He's just so believable as the nasty, weasly prison guard that it's hard to believe he's just acting.

It's well worth reading the book too if you enjoy this. In there you get to find out what all the prisoners have done to deserve being on death row. Well done Frank Darabont, you've done it again! And of course well done Stephen King, without you this ol' world would be a much duller place!

Superb movie, subtle, and based on character interactions; that's not to say that "nothing haoppens", but don't expect explosions and car chases! Very fine acting all around.

I have to take issue with a previous reviewer - the 2-disc SE is very good, their are extras on both discs and the film is deliberately split across the two discs so as to increase the bitrate and hence improve the picture quality. Yes, you can cram 4 hours' worth of video material onto one DVD but the quality would be a bit naff - with a long movie like this, or like Peter Jackson's King Kong remake, splitting the feature gives much sharper picture detail ... surely a good thing?

Excellent release of a brilliant movie.

2 out of 5 stars Too long to get going   January 2, 2007

I was looking forward to seeing this; half thinking it may be in a similar style to Shawshank Redemption and just as good. I was wrong - the two films couldn't be more different, with the latter beating this hands down any day.

Despite a good story (I haven't read the book by the way) and some good casting and acting, this film just does not come together.

The main problem is that it takes far too long to get going. What happens in the first 1-2 hours is a series of seemingly unrelated and dull events with the viewer unable to get hooked into any kind of plot. After this point there's very little any film could do to redeem itself.

When the plot does get going and we establish that John Coffey has a special gift, then it all just gets a bit too predictable and what you think will happen pretty much does happen.

I felt the horror scenes and silly effects didn't add anything to the film. This film would be rated 12 without the horror as there's no strong language or violence. More effort should have been put into pulling off a good story.

Another thing that got to me was the way Tom Hanks and his prison officer cronies were just so nice and "untroubled" for the kind of work they did. Again, like other aspects of the film, it detracted from any kind of realism.

I wouldn't watch this again.
