Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing though has it attracted its fair share of awards attention. For The Tudors is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. It's a plateful for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, it's all vividly and skillfully knitted together. But The Tudors isn't just about its central character, for there's a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neill's Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northam's Thomas More and Natalie Dormer's Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera there's the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter. The Tudors is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. It's also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But it's also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. I studied this historical period in depth and most evidence suggests, (and it is widely accepted), that Henry VIII was in fact a handsome young man in his earlier years. He was tall and solid, a bit unlike the typical stature of the time, one look at his suit of armour can tell us that. They image we usually see of Henry as a tall, large, bearded man was in his later years. Certainly around the time of his first marriage to Catherine, he was an athletic young man. Even after the end of his marriage to Jane Seymour, after her death, he was widely considered to be Europe's ultimate bachelor in a sense!
It doesn't matter about how good-looking he was on a scale of 1-10, or anything trivial like that. What matters is that he was a strong character who at times was weakened by his lust for women and power. Now, sex was a large part of that.. His desire for son and heir?
Do you think Jonathan Rhys-Meyers portrayed this image of Henry VIII well?
I applaud this series for making it an entertaining piece of drama to reach a wide audience. Personally, I thought it was excellent to watch, although some of the historical accuracies of the chronology or interpretations could be debated. It's unfair to call it 'porno', if you thought it was so awfully offensive, why did you watch the rest of the series? Either that, or you didn't, in which case, you probably don't have a very fair comment to make on this whole serial drama.
The only way to decide if you like this series, is to watch it for yourself. If reviews on here have made you nervous about buying the series, I would recommend it's certainly worth renting at least the first disc.

brilliant series! i love the tudors and this was perfect.
there are some historical inaccuracies but to be honest with a henry this hot who cares!
great series, wish it finished at this one though as the second is so inferior.

It is very good acting, but some historical facts are incorrect.
We are doing the Tudors at school and watching this brought boring history to life!
A point though - Henry 8th had red hair - in this, he has dark brown/black hair!
I also found it hard to distinguish between characters, as a lot of the men had dark hair and short beards! lol!
But overall would recommend, also series 2. Whichever was on tv recently (september 08) I loved.

It does seem you either love or hate this drama of Tudor life. Love it for the incredible sumptiousness of the production; and it does have very high production values. Love it for the sheer beauty of the production. Or hate it for the, tsk, tsk historical inaccuracies. What has got to be remembered is that this is not a documentary. It has never purported to be. Not even one of those terrible drama/documentaries. It is a riveting televison drama that has plunged itself headlong into that and made no allusions to anything else. Surely, we the great viewing public are capable of telling the difference. If you are a purist then dont bother watching. If you are into hedonism then revel in it.

I'm a bit of a history buff, so this appealed to me. Finding out it contained lots of nudity just made it even more essential that I watched it! Joking apart, though, this period in history has always fascinated me, and so do any books and films on the subject.
The Tudors is based on the early years of Henry VIII's reign. It's important to remember, though, that this is a drama and is based on the period. Nowhere does it state that this is an accurate representation. I've no doubt that it's based on fact, but nevertheless, what the writers have created is a corker of a series. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers portrays a really arrogant and sinister Henry VIII. It would appear no woman is safe around the young king, regardless of whether she is married or not! In fact, Henry is more interested in chasing women and pleasure than running his country. The vast majority of this responsibility is left to the incredibly powerful Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (played by Sam Neill), whom Henry trusts implicitly. It would appear that this is not a completely wise decision, as although Wolsey does act on behalf of the king in many cases, he is also lining his own pockets and advancing his own position throughout Europe.
Henry does not pay much attention to his queen, Catherine of Aragon, much to her distress. She has borne him a healthy daughter, whom he professes to love dearly, but no male heir. But rather than keep trying, Henry shuns Catherine and believes he is being punished for marrying her, as she was his brother's wife before she was his. From there, the marriage continues to crumble, with Henry constantly pursuing and bedding other women. He gets one of them, Lady Blunt, pregnant. Much to her delight, she bears him a son, who Henry eventually declares as legitimate, and sets him up for life.
Meanwhile, the beautiful Anne Boleyn has caught Henry's eye. What he doesn't know, however, is that it's a set up. Her father and uncle have ordered her to deliberately flaunt herself in front of him and try to get him interested in her, then she can move in on him. They have to ensure a way for her to get her claws into him, and for him not to tire of her as he has so many before her. So Anne resolutely refuses the king's sexual advances on her, claiming that she has vowed to keep her maidenhead until she is married. It seems to do the trick. Refusing Henry simply increases his desire for her, and aims another huge blow at the royal marriage, as Henry starts plotting ways to be rid of Catherine.
I don't want to say too much more because there'll be no surprises! But basically the series focuses heavily on Henry and Anne's relationship, and desperate attempts to annul Henry's marriage to the queen. The series as a whole is incredibly sexy (presumably the lack of TVs and the fact many people couldn't read meant they had sex for entertainment!?), it also features lots of religion and politics, and is absolutely packed with scandal. It'll have you riveted, but only if this genre appeals to you. I can't wait to see the second series!
