Come to Daddy September 26, 2008 John Ferngrove (Hants UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Agreee with everything said by the other reviewers. Dweezil is not Frank and doesn't have that impudently relaxed stage-charisma that Frank had, so that infamous sense of teetering chaos of a Zappa gig is not there. BUT, the band is as good as any of Frank's, and musical discipline is there right from the off. AND, and this could get me lynched, Dweezil's lessons with Uncle Vai have payed off and made him into a guitarist who is IMHO superior to his Dad. Let me finish. Frank loved to jam, but as he said himself, for every live solo worth putting on a recording there were probably 20 that weren't. Dweezil has a more highly developed sense of solo construction, and has a quite individual approach to phrasing that is somewhere between Holdsworth and Bach. This guy has plenty of time to grow and develop, and I hope he can find a way of unifying his twin tasks of continuing his father's legacy whilst, continuing to develop his own unique and valid voice.
Excellent.. well worth a look, even for the diehards July 31, 2008 Wallbalchin (United Kingdom) It is over forty years since my first encounter with Franks music (Royal Festival Hall Feb.1968) remaining a devotee ever since and therefore very familiar with the music presented here. I have to say I am very impressed with the technical ability and enthusiasm of the all the band members in this show and I am sure Frank would be very proud of his sons efforts. For any enthusiast who remains unsure I would recommend they take a look at a couple of clips of this excellent show on the Zappa.com website , then go ahead and get the whole show on this first class DVD.
A Must Have!!!!! June 19, 2008 Mr. T. Coles (Bedford, England) As a certified Zappa Nut, I'm probably a bit biased. That said, this is stunning DVD which (in my humble opinion) should be compulsory viewing for all. Dweezil has assembled a top notch band who (in the true spirit of Frank) are all blessed with amazing technique, totally relaxed and clearly having a great time blasting through some of FZ's best loved music. Guest performers Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio also put their own unique stamp onto the songs they perform ... to hear Terry singing on 'I'm So Cute, Tryin' To Grow a Chin and Punk'y Whips' is just hilarious! I can't recommend this DVD highly enough ... truly worthy of ten stars! lock the doors, switch off your phone, sit back and enjoy possibly the greatest live rock performance you will ever see! Thank You Dweezil.
Such a pleasant surprise June 16, 2008 Derick Holcombe (Sussex, England) Brilliant from start to finish - fantastic songs played by amazing musicians, led by someone who clearly cares passionately about making sure his Fathers music is never forgotten. Thank you Dweezil and everybody else involved in Zappa plays Zappa - I shall be watching and listening to this DVD for years to come.
Fantastic June 6, 2008 D. Carneiro (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am so sorry that I skipped this gig in the U.K. I never dreamed it would be so good. I now know what i missed as I sit watching the DVD which I just recieved (go for the 'fan pack' which is a combo of the double DVD + triple CD of the same concert) Worth every penny.... Thank you Dweezil for continuing to bring Frank's music to us in all its glory. The audio and video quality is just fantastic. The playing and singing is perfect. The song selection is fantastic...and the 'Torture Never Stops' with such good music .....
