720 is a failure November 15, 2008 A. R. Hill (Sheffield) I bought a TomTom 720 in March 2008 and totally regret doing so. Soon after purchase the device would occasionally turn itself off for no reason. These episodes got more regular until it eventually only stayed on for a few seconds. I sent the unit back for repair, being told that it usually takes 5-7 working days to turn around. After some very expensive 'hold the line' phone calls to the elusive customer support and a 1 month wait (waiting for parts they said), I received the repaired unit back. They obviously are not competent in the repairs field, as the unit still does not work. To make matters worse, as well as returning my device, they also sent me a repaired device belonging to another customer, which I now have to return. Incompetence again. My advice to would be purchasers is to type 'tomtom 720 switches off' into Google and read what others have to say in the forums. It is a common fault. Steer well clear. There are other brands on the market as good if not better.
Good little unit. November 1, 2008 nje (uk) I bought this unit to replace version 6 running on a PDA. I have now had it for 2 months and have found it very reliable. I have updated it to Version 8 software and maps and the upgrade using TOM TOM home version 2 went very smoothly. Remember to click Disconnect Device before removing it from the cradle. I think that where people go wrong. I bought this for 174 which was the cheapest at the time, but I notice the price has gone up to 196, so shop round or look at the 730 which has come down, now the 740 has come out. I cannot keep up.
first satnav October 9, 2008 kered (uk) I bought this tomtom for my daughter who moved to spain. (her words) "we'd have been lost without it dad"! seems to be versatile and eliminates 'map stress' I like the clear speech and the easy programming
Very clear and easy to use Sat nav August 20, 2008 Tyler Durdan (Surrey) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was looking for an easy to use and accurate sat nav device and this TomTom fulfils the criteria. User interfaces are very easy to use and the lag between where the TomTom thinks you are and reality is minimal. Probably don't use all the flashy features but basic stuff like setting favourite addresses, speed cameras and changing the speaking voice are great. Nice big screen as well which made me choose over the more budget models. Items that stop a score 5 are 1) the battery is rubbish, barely an hour or two and as a result now never use without the car charger plugged in in case battery dies whilst driving at a key turning, and 2) can take a little while to find the signal when you first fire up (but not as bad as some friend's Sony sat navs though that take ages!)
Total Rubbish - Unit unreliable - updates mess up unit August 4, 2008 D. M. Molyneux 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the worst piece of electronic kit I have ever purchased. I have has it a year now and the unit had now died with a flashing white cross and disk drive - no help from the website and Windows cannot access the drive inside the TomTom - Updates off Tomtom from internet constantly messed up the unit - I had a computer voice go missing a couple of times and the unit also failed to start (lucky I did a backup) - Tomtom have sometimes released buggy updates - Customer Service Eh? 2 weeks for a response - Speed cameras from Tomtom are useless - there are no audible alerts - I had to get ones from PocketGPSWorld (and pay again) and set it up manually The unit is basically unreliable and the software is buggy - the internet updates via Tomtom Home constatnly mess the unit up I have spent more time fixing the unit than actually using it. When it did work it was actually very good - Tomtom need to sort out their QA testing - they shouldn't sell units like this that are so unreliable The only use for it now is an ugly paperweight I gone and bought a Garmin now for 114 A waste of 320 - can't even sell it on ebay as its totally non-functional now
