What a great bit of kit August 26, 2008 Simon Emsley I wanted a simple, easy to use and intuative SAT NAV that my wife could use. Within 5 minutes she had typed in a (full) post code and calculated a route; prefect! Surely all a SAT Nav really needs is clear accurate maps, an ability to find the best route, and be easy to use. This is all 3.
Gimmick-free navigation August 26, 2008 Ms. S. Stennett I was looking for a hassle-free, no gimmick sat nav device. After researching and checking reviews on Amazon and other consumer sites, I decided to go for the Navman S30 3D. It did not disappoint. I opened the box, switched it on, typed in my destination (street address rather than postcode) and within 3 seconds it was giving me directions. Can't say fairer than that. The safety camera alerts are great, the volume is good (even when on the motorway with the stereo on loud) and the directions are clear and precise (e.g. in 300 yards take the 2nd exit at the roundabout onto [road]). So far it has navigated me around central Manchester, Bristol and Glastonbury without a hitch. The mapping software seems to be up to date, with no entry, one way roads, dual carriageways etc clearly marked. I took a couple of wrong turns on purpose and the route recalculation was really fast (less than 5 seconds). It didn't give the irritating "recalculating ... recalculating ... recalculating" announcement, just quietly got on with it. Excellent. The interface is intuitive and easy to use. The keypad for typing in addresses/etc may be fiddly for people with larger fingers. I have used all singing and all dancing sat nav devices before and, given the option I'd go for the Navman S30 3D again - it does exactly what it says on the tin and very fast too.
good buy August 11, 2008 Carol (Essex, England) Navman S30 3D Satellite Navigation Unit With UK & Ireland Mapping This was my first sat nav and I am pleased with it. It was fairly easy to get up and running and guided me through an unknown route very well. I had a bit of trouble with putting in adresses as it repeated it back OK but then didn't recognise it! The voice instructions are easy to hear and I like the fact that it repeats it. The downsides are firstly that there is NO instruction book in the box! I found this extremely irritating as I had to access instructions on the internet and would have prefered to have looked at a written manual. This was made more annoying by the provision of a very fat book with legal information in all languages that I do NOT need to have to hand so that could have been accessed through the internet instead and the space in the box taken up with a more useful user guide. The only other downside was that the unit kept falling off my windscreen and caused distraction to my driving as well as the threat of breaking the unit. But all in all a good buy; and it does it's job.
technically wonderful, mapping inaccurate August 8, 2008 pen name (uk) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first car satnav system and I was impressed with the ease of use, the fact that you could put it in a pocket and listen to the directions without any hassle of having to have it glued to a window. It would have been nice to have been able to put in lat and long and have them read out on the screen, surely this would have been simple to add on. The only real issue is that the maps are at least three years out of date (in 2008 the Oakham bypass doesn't exist on the satnav although it has been there for at least two years and planned two years before that) and some junctions are wholly inaccurate. You wouldn't expect to buy a map in 2008 with a 2004 road system shown and you wouldn't expect that from a satnav either. It would have been excusable if a free upgrade voucher were given with the Amazon purchase, however, there was no mention of that when I bought it. Because of the out of date mapping I would rate it as being almost useless and potentially timewasting and unreliable.
Terrible if you live in Ireland July 30, 2008 Dara O. Muircheartaigh 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wow, what a great product if it only worked ! Easy set up and display but the maps must be older than me and I'm 35 ! Likes to take you for winding routes up side roads all the time. Have used it four times and EACH time got the route wrong. It's a poor joke when on one journey it showed me driving through fields FIVE times. Great product if you already know where your going.
