4 out of 5 stars TomTom ONE XL review   November 6, 2008

I mainly use my TomTom ONE XL for geocaching, so I enter the destination latitude and longitude co-ordinates taken from an OS map and it's great. I don't find using a postcode as a desination is very accurate and it only takes you to the general area, however, directions over a long route are very good. I especially like the feature when it recalcultes another route within seconds if you divert from the recommened one for any reason. One annoying thing however is telling you to turn right when you are already on a main road and it's simply a right-hand bend with a junction on the left. It also will direct you up a dirt track occasionally, so you do have to use a bit of common sense, drive on and see what the recalculation tells you. Having the distance and arrival time displayed is also very useful as you can easily see which is the best route to suite the type of roads you want to use. A nice feature which is missing would be to enter a waypoint at the touch of a button, so if you want to return to a particular place, you can do so easily. One downside to all this however is their customer service. I recently had occasion to email them about a query I had with a map upgrade. I received no reply, then a week later they had the cheek to send me a customer satisfaction survey to fill in! They had it coming! I still haven't had a reply..

3 out of 5 stars Some good features, but some bad...   October 4, 2008

I haven't used a sat nav before, and bought this one without attempting much market research. (Bloke in Curry's said it's the market leader).
[1] Nice suction pad device to attach to windscreen. Mine's at the bottom right - where the licence would be, but on the driver's side. You can remove the satnav when you leave the car. The fixing isn't very good - there's a knack to clicking it in place - or it can come out.
[2] Cigar lighter connector pokes straight out and can get in the way of the gear stick. (It can be charged from a USB port too).
[3] It is difficult to use, unless you love pressing buttons to see what happens next. I'm looking now at a map it's showing me, my street. I want to set this position as a 'Favourite' or a 'Point of Interest' so I can find it again. The thing says: Postpone/ Delete/ Handle now' and is completely unhelpful. This is typical. There are several menus with the briefest possible info; similar pictures pop up in different places. The technology is terrific - it's like a BBC costume drama with enormous money paid out, but the script useless and trashy. (I see one review states you can't turn the destination search feature off, and just use it to show whwre you are. In fact, you can, but it's not clear how).
[4] There are some amusing features - for example I have a Queen sondalike voice. There's a fixed cmaera warning.
[5] The satnav can get a bit puzzled if there are huge wide roads with many exits close to each other.
[6] BUT entering a new place - suppose you're visiting someone and want to note the place; you should be able to just press a button and enter your description. OR you should be able to enter some landmark's map references. But it's bafflingly difficult.
[7] It's good for walking - you can see if a short cut really goes where you want, for example. And when driving, if you want to detour to see something, it's very easy to go back - you can never get lost. Very positive in that sense, and something I hadn't realised.
[8] I can't honestly recommend it for ease of use. It may be other satnavs are worse though - I don't know and frankly can't be ars*d to find out - the people who sell the things should do the wrok for you.

Great product, but i was expecting it to have an expansion slot..(ie SD memory slot) It only came with 1 GB internal memory which is full up with the West Europe maps, So stuck if travelling around West and East Europe..
Mine did have an option to cancel a route...

3 out of 5 stars But you can't cancel your route!   August 13, 2008

Yes, there's lots to like about the Tomtom One XL v2 but it has a major flaw - it's not possible to cancel a route! Unlike other Tomtoms, where the option to do this is unlocked when you choose to show more menu items, this model does not appear to have hidden menus.

Why is this annoying? Well it's not when you want to be directed somewhere. You can, of course, change your route whenever you go somewhere new, but if you're like me, you sometimes would like to have your sat nav on even when you don't want to be directed anywhere. Sadly, the option to do this doesn't exist.

The only way round it is to ask the unit to set up a long route and, while it's calculating this, to cancel it quickly before it's done. This does have the desired effect but it's a complete pain to do this every time, and do you really want a sat nav unit that's a complete pain?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Product   July 30, 2008

Tom Tom always have some of the best mapping and services available - and this is a fantastic product. Really pleased with it, crystal clear screen even in bright daylight. New windscreen mount holds on a treat too, even on slightly curved screens. 10 out of 10 - hopefully everyone else will be just as happy with it as I am.
