4 out of 5 stars Is the Nuvi 300 Mac OSX compatible?   October 27, 2008

In case it helps anyone considering purchasing a Nuvi 300 - they have a Mac specific support section, specific Mac firmware and map update routines as well as full support for a number of other web/mapping utilities - which in my experience worked first time, error free.

... it's also a great little GPS.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb   August 30, 2008

This was my first sat-nav and I have absolutely no regrets about buying it. It's ridiculously easy to use, with a clear display and excellent voice instructions which are perfectly audible even in an open-topped car! It's also a convenient size for slipping into a jacket pocket when you leave the car for a even a few minutes.

With regard to the "problems" that have been mentioned elsewhere - there have been occasions when it's taken some time to get a signal, but those occasions have been very few and far between. On the subject of routing errors, I have yet to find a sat-nav that doesn't have them! Any sat-nav is an AID, not a substitute for a brain! If the sat-nav tells me that I'm driving across a field because it doesn't recognise a new road, I've found that simply looking through the windscreen helps to clarify the situation! If it tries to send me up a muddy track, I know I'm on the wrong road ... but I just take a detour, the Garmin will get me where I want to go.

All in all, a superb piece of kit.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   August 26, 2008

I have used many different types of sat navs, but never owned one before. i brought this one in a hurry as i desparatly needed one for a weekend away. At first i was a little wary because of how cheap it was, but was pleasantly suprised with it. i loved it! very easy to use and very compact. its small enough to pop in your handbag when you finish driving. i would definetely recommend this one to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars The Garmin 300 Wonder!   August 10, 2008

It is indeed usable straight from the box as it is fully charged. A few minutes for the once only connection to the satellites and it was ready to go. Nice to see a neat carry case included along with a USB lead and car lead both of which can be used to charge the unit so no need to buy any extras. The windscreen sucker works fine once you have cleaned the windscreen! Instructions are adequate but I went to the Garmin site and downloaded the manual (free) which tells you everything.
I have nothing but praise for this little wonder. Having heard bad things about Sat Navs in general, I have put off purchasing one but this is brilliant.
It includes UK maps only so if you are intending to use it then would advise you go for ones with extra maps but I only want it for the UK.
First journey was to an unknown place about 30 miles away to give it a test. I missed a turning (my fault!) and the unit re-calculated very quickly. Shortly after it told me to turn right but the road was closed for repairs. By this time, I had no idea where I was but the Garmin just kept on sorting me out another route and got me to my destination.
It keeps up with the roads when you are travelling along and gives ample notice of turns.
All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend this Sat Nav to anyone. It is a little gem and small enough to stick in a handbag and can then be used to walk about. There's an option to 'set location' so going somewhere unfamiliar, you can set the location of your car in a car park say, walk around the area etc then tell it to take you back to the car park.
Buy one....you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars little gem of a nuvi!   August 9, 2008

Having read the other positive reviews about the Nuvi 300, I took the plunge and bought one. At 80 I think that it is easily worth the money, the unit quickly powered up to get it's position. It fits easily to the windscreen through it's mount and easily detaches when not required. The unit is small enough to fit into your pocket with the supplied case to protect it. The first time I used it on a route I deliberately took different routes away from suggested route, it quickly recalculates the new route in a matter of seconds. On the down side, the audio is a little tinny and I wish that the unit would give which road direction to use before getting onto roundabouts (i.e. If it said "at the roundabout take the third exit to the M4") I think the plus points make this an ideal first Sat Nav, easy to use and follow plus the other applications which other reviewers have mentioned, well done Garmin!
