4 out of 5 stars Tom Tom 520 great - less sure about Traffic   July 2, 2008

I've had the 520T for 6 months now. It was my first Sat Nav and I'm very pleased. The main device is very easy to use and has been genuinely helpful, even though I rarely drive long distance without a passenger. The plug-in traffic aerial only gives information on major roads like motorways and hasn't always been accurate, so next time I'd get just the 520 without Traffic (Tom Tom are bringing a new Traffic add-on to the UK next year, which promises to be much better, though more expensive).

I'd give the 520 itself five stars and the current Traffic aerial two stars, hence four overall.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading, Very Poor Software, Oh and a Car Crash   February 17, 2008

I simply must write to advise people to seriously consider purchasing one of these, especially for anyone a) not computer literate, or b) a relatively new driver.

My partner has been driving 6 months now and had mentioned a few times, despite my trying to convince her to learn to map read, that she wanted sat nav, which culminated in her getting upset at getting lost for a couple of hours one night. Anyway, I bought this product on the back of rationalising that she'd not be distracted reading maps while driving and it had hands-free mobile facilities.

First off, the hands-free is a waste of time; it's got such a terrible mic that you end up shouting and being misheard the whole time. Distracting at best.

Secondly, the traffic for life is misleading as its just an RDS aerial, and not the actual TomTom traffic service.

Thirdly, the TomTom HOME software is truly awful. As a software developer with a background from a very well-known software company, it is one of the most unreliable and bug-ridden pieces of work I've seen since the mid-nineties. Search out the forums to see the issues people are having with it.

Finally, the actual device is buggy, too. I've witnessed first hand as an experienced driver the misleading directions and told my partner to keep an eye on the map and not to take the spoken directions verbatim.

Today, just after the device hung as it received a phonecall, my partner mounted the central reservation and had a puncture while trying to "keep right", while the map was pointing to a left turn. Probably something an experienced driver would have dealt with, but the poor girl is, as I type, waiting for a tow-truck. The AA said that she "wouldn't believe the amount of accidents they attend as a result of sat-nav".

If the internet can do anything, it can provide a balanced set of opinions and aid people in making buying decisions, and avoid dissapointment or worse.

Therefore, I implore you to consider how bad life was when you had to look at a map and read good ol' road signs.

What a shame.

I was a bit unsure about this sat nav after reading some of the reviews. I would like to say, however, I have not experienced any of the problems some people have. It has worked perfect and I have added an SD card for my music.
You do get free trafic info, using the supplied ariel that fits inside your windscreen, but the information you get is patchy. You can upgrade to getting traffic info from TomTom through your mobile phone, but you have to pay a subscription for this.
I would say that if you want to use the hands free feature's on this, then you should check with the TomTom website for your phone's compatability before buying it.
Overall a great unit, and i would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars TomTom 520T   January 13, 2008

As with the previous reviews, this unit is easy to use both in terms of planning a trip and the actual guidance. It locates you very quickly via the built-in quick-fix software.

The only misleading part is that you are under the impression that "Free Traffic Updates For Life" means you get automatic subscription to the PLUS Traffic service (saving ~ 30/yr). This isn't the case, in the TomTom 520T box you also get a RDS-TMC traffic signal reciever. The RDS-TMC will pick up traffic information from radiostations and convert them onto the TomTom. This is the "Free Traffic Updates For Life" you're actually getting. With that said the RDS-TMC is actually fairly useful (only tried in London so-far) and highlighted several delays which the TomTom then navigated me around. How this rates against the PLUS Traffic service I don't know.

4 out of 5 stars The great GO 520 but with a rather useless RDS reciever.   December 28, 2007

This is just the GO 520 with an RDS receiver, the RDS signal is generally not strong enough to be of much use, as far as free traffic updates for life this is not technically true as RDS is free once you have the receiver/ariel it is not a subscription based system. The unit is self is just the same GO 520.
This new design has all of the great feature you expect from TomTom but coupled with a more usable mounting system and a great widescreen display. Both myself and my wife spent a large amount of time investigating the various models on the market and found the features and ease of use of the TomTom Go 520/720 were clearly the best available. Coupled with the iPod cable I can now use both my TomTom and iPod through my car radio and not have difficulty hearing instructions over the music. On the downside my Mobile phone, an orange SPV3100, does not want to work with the hands free option provided; this is a bit of a disappointment to an otherwise perfect solution.
