2 out of 5 stars disappointing   November 16, 2008

We bought this as a region-free replacement for our even cheaper Amazon-bought Yelo DVD player - sadly no longer available. Compared to the Yelo we have the following issues:-

- the multi-region hack is tedious but ultimately worked OK
- the picture quality (especially colour) out-of-box was very poor; but it was possible to adjust the various menus to correct this (SCART to Sony LCD TV)
- It seems impossible to stop the player from auto-sleeping if it is paused for any length of time (the 'sleep' menu setting makes it sleep whilst actually playing!!!!)
- The above is particularly a problem because, even if the disk is left in, 'sleep' causes the machine to forget its place on the disk. So if you pause it and go for an extended phonecall/coffee you will have to sit through all the garbage stuff ('copying is stealing'....) again to get to the disk menu, then use scene select to find your place again!! FTR the Yelo remembers its place on the DVD indefinitely if the disk is left in the machine.
- We are trying to repair the Yelo! (plays OK but the disk tray eject tends to stick).

4 out of 5 stars A good inexpensive multi-regional player   November 2, 2008

If all you want is a very basic dvd player, say for the bedroom, then at the moment, you are really looking at either this Philips or the Toshiba SD280E. They are similarly priced with similar specs. The advantage of the Tosh is that it will play your divx movies whilst the Philips will not. Nevertheless I chose the Philips, purely on the fact that it is silver in colour whilst the Toshiba is black. A minor point really but as my bedroom telly is also silver I wanted it to match.
I see from reading these comments that some have struggled with making the Philips multi-region. If this is you then try again and make sure you follow Kalpesh's instructions to the letter. It does work. It took me less than a minute to complete.

Yes it's cheap. For a reason. Within two months of me purchasing I cannot play anything on it all. Am now in the process of returning what promised to be a very versatile machine but instead is what appears to be a white elephant. Shame.

I bought this DVD player as the product specification said it played PAL and NTSC. It doesn't if you follow the instruction book provided with the machine. However, it does if you follow the instructions provided by Kalpesh. Easy to follow, even for someone like me who is completely non-technical. Thank you, Kalpesh!
