3 out of 5 stars Good technology but not completely bug free   June 24, 2008

I bought this unit 3 weeks ago from Halfords for 99 and have used it almost everyday since. Its a very good example of using good technology to make a very user-friendly product. It was very easy to set-up straight out of the box and personalise after registering on the Garmin website.

Then Garmin sent me a map update CD which I connected to the unit via my laptop and let the CD installer do its job. In the middle of the update, the USB cable got disconnected and that was the start of a big problem. the unit froze up and when I restarted it, showed the Garmin GPS BSOD - 'No detailed mapping available. Your Streetpilot cannot function'. The computer would not longer recognise the unit as a peripheral. I tried myGarmin support but tthat takes forever to load. I tried various forums via Google and found out about the hard reset (no joy).

So I took it back to Halfords for a replacement and have luckily got a new unit because it was within the 28 days. Garmin support is trying to fob me off by first saying that I have voided the warranty by loading maps without enough onboard memory (untrue) and then by updating maps using damaged CD (makes no sense). I have kept them at bay saying that the problem is more fundamental in that the computer will not recognise my unit as a peripheral. This is a laptop driver issue because the new unit connects fine. Plus the old one does not show up on the computers of 2 Halford's stores.

So this is a bug, pretty major one which Garmin should have caught and fixed during factory acceptance testing. Other than this, the unit is fine and I wouldn't trade it for a Tom Tom. But be wary of updates.

i am a little disappointed by this sat-nav the other day i was travelling on the motorway and it kept telling me to do U-turns which was incorrect, luckily i had a rough idea where i was heading. i dont think its driver friendly especially when typing in addresses and postcodes. it keeps falling off the windscreen very annoying when driving.

This was my first Sat Nav and I was a bit apprehensive about what type to purchase as the market offers so many.

I needn't have worried though, from the moment you take it out of the box everything is so easy. I am really impressed with all the different features, I really didn't expect such a reasonably prices item to offer so much. It doesn't matter where you are, you can find shops, petrol stations etc, ideal if you are on holiday and don't know the local area. You can save personal locations in the favourites menu...again so easy. It even has a warning when you are in a speed camara zone...brilliant.
I would recommend this to anyone, in fact my pal went and bought the same model within the first week of seeing my Sat Nav.

5 out of 5 stars A superb satnav system - can't fault it   February 23, 2007

Door to door, this satnav system has not let me down once. Also helps you find nearest car parks and petrol stations either on route or at your final destination so you don't spend ages driving around aimlessly trying to find one. Also finds loads of other things such as cash machines, places to eat, etc. More importantly it finds the speed cameras for you and warns you visually and audibly!

When stuck in traffic due to roadworks or an accident, just press the 'detour' button and leave everybody else to queue instead!

Also allows you to customise the display to your vehicle from choice of saloon/hatchback, sports, 4x4, or just a simple arrow - all of which you can change the colour of to match your car!

Loads of other features, too many to mention

superb piece of kit. I upgraded from the garmin i3 street pilot to this and it was certainly a good decision. Easy to use touch screen, good display size. I honestly cannot fault it at all.

Highly recomended
