4 out of 5 stars Great unit, but decide what features you need before you buy.   August 10, 2008
Andrew Rogers
I've had a Syrius 600 plus for about a month now. I bought it to replace a built-in (Audi) sat nav device as the car goes back in a few months' time. For navigation, this is better. The display showing separate turn screen is really neat, much better than the Audit unit and better than other sat navs I've seen. The blue tooth work really well, my only criticism being that it doesn't synchorize with (or read from) my mobile phone address book. I think the TomTom 720 does this.
The speed camera indicator is really good, with a great display. The previous reader who wants a camera detector is expectiong too much. Very few do this. I do have a separate DriveSmart camera device, with preloaded camera positions and laser detector. I've had this for some years, and never has it detected a hand-held laser - I suspect it would be too late by then anyway. Best advice is to keep to the speed limit, to anticipate the sort of places camera traps are likley to be, to do 30 mph in a 30 limit, for example.
I would recommend the Syrius 600 plus, which is a high quality unit, but decide what featyres you need before choosing your model. Don't be hoodwinked by claims of frequent camera updates (6 monthly is good enough really). Do be swayed by the great display and functionality of this unit.

I Have owned a syrius for 11 months. The 1st unit wouldn't work and i got a replacement fairly quickly. the first 3 months it worked OK the best points being the speed camera detector and speed warning. After 3 months the unit quickly went downhill. it took ages to switch on and detect satalites, it would just freeze before and halfway through a journey.and it now tells me we are parked on road 100 yeards away!!. This is garbage, needless to say performance products are not interested as the 12 month guarantee is almost up. I have replaced the unit with a Tom Tom. cheaper to buy, faster and easier to use. PS dont use after updates the syrius will freeze for 30 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Camera database   April 7, 2008

I don't own this unit, but I do own a Snooper Sapphire which uses the same camera database. I am only responding to help the guy from Wales and any other potential (or current) owners of Snooper devices - you can get the database updated! If you find a spot with mobile Scamera vans, then either make a user point OR look up the coordinates of the location on the web and email Snooper telling them. I did this and got a well used site listed for everyone else to be warned about :o) This is the best way to beat the Scameras, a community that helps each other, thumbs up to Snooper!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent System!   December 30, 2007

I love this unit, so much better than anything I have used previously. It gives warnings of static speed cameras and also possible locations for radar vans and mobile cameras. The warning is clear, audible and even tells you what type of camera is ahead and what the speed limit is at that time, something along the lines of "Warning! Gatso ahead. Speed limit 30 miles per hour - check your speed!" There is also an on-screen warning with the speed limit in big red letters. Couldn't be plainer. You get exactly the same type of message for possible radar vans and mobile camera locations only they call them "Risk Zones". There is also the facility for inputting your own Risk Zones and telling the Syrius what sort they are and what the speed limit is.

To the earlier poster who complained that the unit did not detect a handheld radar gun around a corner - this unit never claims to do that. You need a radar detector for that, not a combined sat nav/static camera detector. And I believe that pure radar detectors are about to become illegal anyway. But you can 'mark' that area in your Syrius as a possible Risk Zone.

The navigation function is easy and very accurate. It also has bluetooth and a very good clear loudspeaker. Doesn't do traffic jam alerts but never mind, my car radio can be set to do those automatically. It also clearly shows petrol stations, hospitals, restaurants and many other points of interest. You can also input multiple journeys, so if I have 3 visits to do in a morning I can programme all 3 of them into the sat nav at the same time.

The best point is that it runs on a Linux operating system not the dreadful Windows CE! It starts up quickly, has a very simple interface, and finds the satellites within seconds. It has won a number of awards this year, including a Which? award, and I can see why.

This operates solely from a database and shows possible radar locations as Risk Zones, so isn't foolproof when it comes to radar vans - as I said earlier, you need a standalone radar detector for that - but it's better than nothing and at least improves the odds against the scameras.

I highly recommend this unit.

3 out of 5 stars now I'm worried!   December 27, 2007

This arrived promptly and in good order. I got it up and going easily (without the help of a small boy!). My first concern was that, as I only have a 12v power outlet in my car and no cigar lighter, I wouldn't be able to charge the unit. The battery only last 3 hours, not long enough for me as I'm out and about all day. I contacted the company who sold me (for 11) something to effect a permanent connection. I'll have to pay someone to fit this for me but haven't got round to it yet.
Like all satnavs, you need to use your commonsense with this thing - it will try to direct you down unsuitable roads at times. It can also get confused for a while if you ignore it's instructions. Also, you'll need to change the default settings, or it'll bing-bong at you constantly like a demented Ruth Madoc in Hi-de-Hi! But the directions it gives are very clear.
BUT, I have a big concern. My prime reason for buying this unit was that I got 2 speeding tickets in 18 months. And last week I went through an area where I got my second ticket (over a year ago) and the unit didn't acknowledge that I was in a danger area. I knew I was, of course, but that's not the point - what if I hadn't known? And even worse, it didn't detect the cop with the handheld device hiding round the corner!
So now I've lost all confidence in it as a camera detector, which was my main reason for buying it. I now think I may as well have bought a much cheaper device for giving me directions only.
