Overall great product, be aware of small flaws though November 18, 2008 Mr. Andrew P. Osborn (Wiltshire, UK) Bought this unit before an RV holiday in the US - it really is invaluable abroad, especially in the US where most paper maps are not so good. It takes a huge amount of stress out of driving, primarily through a single feature - showing how far ahead your next turn is. This means you are not constantly looking out for that elusive road on the left - you can relax until you get very close to it, and then its usually obvious. Its quick to recalculate a route if you deviate from the chosen one, so it really doesn't matter even you miss a turn somewhere, it will always get you to your destination. We also found it really useful for finding restaurants and supermarkets nearby and on our route. A few minor flaws : 1) Our unit came with US traffic reports, but not UK ones. Garmin said they don't supply a free subscription to this anymore although Amazon are still advertising that this is included. It took a couple of emails to get this sorted. 2) You cant look up US addresses by ZIP code, although its actually pretty easy to do it from the full address. 3) Its route choices sometimes dont use the quickest minor roads, if you have local knowledge - use it. You will see the estimated arrival time clock down when you make a turn down your short cut. Quite why the unit cant figure this out on its own is a bit odd, but having said that the differences are always small, and you WILL always get there, so its not worth worrying too much. 4) As with other reviews, the FM transmitter for playing the voice through the car radio is pretty useless - lots of interference, and it means you cant listen to the radio at the same time. The internal speaker works fine though, so this is not really needed, but dont depend on it for playing your MP3 music! Despite these flaws its a great piece of kit and very easy to use.
Fantastic piece of kit October 11, 2008 Anand Srivastava (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
What can I say - such a great product! We used this product in America, and I have to say that after travelling around seven thousand miles spanned out over a couple of months, the product has not yet failed us! Very impressed with its reliability. The only thing I have to say when following a Sat Nav route, you have only 2 options: 1) Do it their way or 2) Do it your way! You can't go in between, otherwise you will just get lost and end up blaming the stupid thing when in fact its a lifesaver!
Garmin Nuvi 770.. Magic! August 29, 2008 Paul Shakespeare 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought the 770 for a two week trip to Southern California. I wanted an easy drive from LAX to the first hotel and for onward journeys. It was great. We did have paper maps to begin with, just to be on the safe side. By the end of the two week period we just started driving and then switched on the unit which soon picked up our route and guided us wherever we wanted to go. The Garmin (Jane) was even a source of entertainment with her prompts and orders. We did wonder whether when we returned home Jane might start to organize our life beyond navigation. We have since had the unlock maps problem (the unit still worked)but sorted it in minutes. It is just a case of creating a text file that contains the unlock code on the website, once you have registered your device. Because we had already registered it was easy to go to the website and copy and paste the number into a text file and put on the unit via a USB cable.
Garmin 770 - made my holiday so easy. July 30, 2008 Sean MacIntyre 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first sat-nav. I was going to Florida for the 1st time and needed help in getting around. Had a look at different sat-nav's and this one stood out. I only received the product on Thurday evening, I was flying out on Friday morning, so the first time I used the sat-nav was when I opened it up in Sanford Airport. I turned it on and entered the address and away we went. I did take a few wrong turns (my fault not the directions) and a bit of re-calculating had us back on track. All the attactions were easily found - supermarkets, shopping & eating places were all found by a click of a button. What a brilliant bit of software!!
Excellent unit June 13, 2008 N. Adams (Lichfield UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Upsides: Good clear display and audible instructions (which is what I wanted). Map content for street names seems to be excellent. Occasionally the routes chosen seem non-intuitive, but all have worked very well. Traffic rerouting has kept me away from problems successfully several times already. Four stars rather than five because - Downsides: Only able to store 12 routes (unless they can also be stored on memory card?) Speaker volume could do with being a bit louder (usually have to use at 100%). Amazon advertise the 770 with Perfect Partner 12V vehicle adapter cable, but the unit comes with this (incorporating the traffic information antenna) which makes the advertisment misleading.
