So good I bought another June 19, 2008 Mr. S. Eustice (London, UK) I bought one of these for my mother who lives out in the sticks where FM signal is poor. I knew that DAB signal was good as I have a set in my car which works well. She wasn't disappointed! She uses it mainly for Radio 4 and the sound fills a quite substantial kitchen, the controls are very easy to use - the simplicity for her was the killer app! So a couple of months later, the backlight failed on my kitchen DAB, (not a Pure) so the ideal replacement.
No "Snooze" facility March 21, 2008 K. McIlwaine (Birmingham UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Do I mean "Snooze facility"? I want to fall asleep at night listening to the radio and have it turn itself off after about an hour when I'm safely in the land of Nod. Not much to ask - many cheaper radios have this facility, but not the Evoke-1S. How stupid is that? The sound quality is not great, even on DAB, and there is no Tone control on this model to sharpen up the sound so it sounds quite fluffy. I'm returning it to Amazon
Overpriced rubbish. February 1, 2008 Welsh Osprey 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Very disappointed with this radio. Build quality is poor with the radio not inset to the wooden frame correctly and the sound quality is appalling. I can only liken it to listening to a normal radio with a pillow over the speaker. My old Sony FM radio knocks spots off this radio so back to Amazon it goes. Unfortunately, I was also bought the Chargepak for this radio as a Christmas present and I am unable to return this to John Lewis as more than 28 days have elapsed. Arghhh!
I would give it 0 stars if I could January 31, 2008 L. Tozer (London, England) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am truly disappointed with this, the sound quality is terrible. If you turn it up the distortion is really bad. The build quality seems good but when you look a little closer mine is inset crokedly. I brought the stereo speaker and chargepak with itso it all came to around 160.00 (not from Amazon), I am taking it all back today. The Dualit radio is far superior for sound my only problem with it is the position of the display thus I have already taken this back too. I am unable to find a DAB to suit (want one with Aux in and battery pack so I can take it in the garden). The plus side for this unit is probably only the charge pak does keep its charge for a very long time.
Nearly great - but poor audio January 25, 2008 John Bastable (Hampshire, England) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this radio on the basis of the reviews and my daughter's excellent Pure 'One' DAB radio. It feels well built, the display is gorgeous and the controls are easy to use. The big downside for me was the audio quality. First of all the bass seems overly emphasised and there is no tone control! I did not get crystal clear reception on any channel, lots of evidence of digital noise and highly compressed audio. At higher volumes it was just unpleasant and unbalanced. I have good reception, my daughter's 'One' is fine in the same location. I cannot recommend this radio. I'm not sure if it is a design fault or a bad batch. Pity. Mine went back the next day.
