Somewhat impressive... August 28, 2008 Bookwormjo (London) I'm trying to get fit after having a baby a year ago and thought I'd try a workout DVD to get myself going. Davina McCall seems to have fronted quite a few recently and she's looking pretty fit, so here goes... Anyway, this exercise programme is divided into three thirty minute workouts, which seek to tone and work every muscle in your body, so far so good. The first workout, 'the pump' is interval cardio training mixed with loads of lunges, squats and abdominal exercises and although I walk everywhere, the lunges and squats were *really* difficult and I felt it for the next few days. The second workout is called 'cardio box' and it's a mixture of cardio and kickboxing moves, which are pretty fab. The third and final one, 'core stability' is a yoga type one, but I've never really got on with it. The camera angles are rather annoying as you can't see the whole of Davina and her personal trainers' bodies, which is annoying if you're unsure how to do an exercise and they should tell you to get your dumbbells and mat ready before you start! Also, Davina's gurning is rather offputting, ditto her tedious anecdotes and pretend exhaustion. To conclude, as a concept, it's a good idea, but it does lack a certain something.
Alright workout for busy people May 1, 2008 Melissa Wilcox (UK) If you're returning to exercise then this DVD is for you, as it will ease you back in quite nicely. It's also good if you're like me and occasionally come home from work late, but really feel like you need to do some form of exercise. As mentioned before, the DVD is in three sections: The Pump - Decent for toning. I really liked the combination of upper and lower body exercises which you didn't get in her first DVD, and makes your workout more efficient. However, because you're working out more then one bodypart at once you have to watch your form. Cardiobox - You have to throw yourself into this one to feel any effects. I usually don't feel as if I've done a workout the day after if I've done this one by itself. Core - There are much better core workouts out there! I'm a massive fan of Pilates, and this routine feels far too easy. All in all I'd say it was worth a buy if you can get it at a good price. However, if you're already fit then I'd suggest something more challenging like The Firm Maximum Calorie Burn.
Disappointed! February 18, 2008 Ms. H. Dawson (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having read great reviews I thought I'd give it a go but I was really disappointed. Davina was unbelieveably annoying the first time I tried it with her babbling on and pesimistic attitude - who wants to work out to someone moaning and whinging? I turned it to the handy 'mostly music' option only to find that the music was dubbed out of time with the moves in places - equally annoying! The level of the workout is pitched really quite low so for anyone who exercises a lot it might not be what you are looking for.
Good but boring December 15, 2007 J. Crabtree (Yorkshire England) I bought this DVD together with the Power of Three as it came highly recommended. My three is exceptionally easy and really does do a good job if you can keep at it and work through the boring music, the idle chitter chatter and the boring repetition! I found I would be so bored that I would mentally switch off. I have switched to Nell McAndrew's Ultimate Challenge which is fantastically brilliant in every way shape and form. I have also got into Billy Blank's Tae bo workouts which are very challenging and motivating. Most of all I personally found Nell and Billy's workouts fun to do... Whilst Davina's workouts are good they were just not for me but I have given them 3stars because they do a good job if you can keep to them.
Easy-peasy workout, absolute beginners only July 25, 2007 E. Eaton-Smith (Scotland) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've recently had a baby and I bought this workout to help me get rid of all the flab I accrued during nine months of eating a family sized bar of Green and Blacks every day. I already have Power Of Three, and before pregnancy I used to alternate that with Nell McAndrew's Ultimate Challenge, which kept me in reasonable shape at the time. These workouts feature the same team of instructors as Power Of Three - Mark and Jackie. Presumably they're married, although this is never explicitly stated. There's some kind of weird dynamic going on - I suspect Mark secretly has the hots for Davina (he spends a goodly amount of time checking out her bottom in Power of Three) and Jackie seems rather intimidated by her, so there's a lot of nervous tittering every time Davina makes a rubbish joke, which is a lot. In fact, many of the rubbish jokes Davina made in Power Of Three are simply repeated for your viewing pleasure this time, which is a bit irritating. Thankfully there's a "Mostly Music" option. My main problem with this DVD is that it's far too easy. I can't see for the life of me how you'd lose any weight or get remotely fit if you follow Davina's advice to do each half hour section only once a week. An hour and a half of weekly exercise is just not going to cut it unless you're also on a strict diet. And, frankly, if that's the case I wouldn't bother with the DVD. Several times during the exercises, Davina, Mark or Jackie tell you encouragingly that "it's fine to walk through this bit", "you can stop now if you like" or "you don't need weights for this, just do the movements". Even better: why not watch the whole thing whilst sitting on the sofa stuffing Doritos into your gob. I understand the need to make these kinds of DVDs accessible for people who haven't done much exercise before and maybe aren't too confident, but the whole point of exercising is that you have to push yourself a little bit at least. It also doesn't help that Davina pretends she's finding the exercises much more challenging than they are - once, even collapsing dramatically on the floor after a set of squats; another time trilling "that's enough now!" halfway through another set, which really puts you off your stride. Having said all that, Cardio Box is quite fun, even though, as others have said, you stay in one stance for too long. It's easy to adjust that yourself though. And there are some good exercises in Pump - to get the most out of each of these sections, really go for it in the minute long fat burner bits. And don't, please don't "walk it through" with Jackie, unless you still want to be puffing your way up stairs this time next year.
