NOT for beginners! September 16, 2008 A. Keys (UK) I liked this DVD overall, but it is definitely not for beginners. I would re-label the two sections as Intermediate and Advanced. In my opinion, this is a problem with most of the DVDs I have come across; they insist on doing the ashtanga style pose "flow" type of routine, which has presumably become so popular because it appeals to people more used to going to an aerobics class. Unfortunately, to be able to flow from one position to another, you really need to be able to get into the positions properly in the first place. If you can't, because you're a beginner, you're going to feel under pressure, and possibly push yourself too far in the process. On the other hand, doing a side bend, coming out of it, then getting back into position and doing a warrior pose is just as good for you, but much easier for a real beginner. If you really haven't done yoga before, I recommend going to an evening class run by your local council. It WILL be full of older women, but they're usually friendly and you'll probably find the poses easier than they do (I write as a 44 yr old, who first went to one such class at 16!), which will make you feel good. Most importantly, you'll learn all these poses as individual items, which will then make it easier to come back to a DVD such as this later on at home, knowing what you realistically can and shouldn't do. One last thing. Jayne Middlemiss is clearly genuine in her reasons for wanting to do a yoga DVD and her video diary is a great little extra, bringing a little humour to proceedings.
Good, but not for beginners August 10, 2008 Salvora (UK) I liked the instructor and I also liked that Jane does not speak at all during the routine. I also liked the music and the scenery. I found the instructions easy to follow, and the pace of exercises was good. However, I'm a beginner and this DVD has two levels, 1 and 2. I have only done level 1 so far and that was a bit challenging. The postures were challenging, and were held for too long for me. Because of this I do not recommend this DVD for beginners. Don't get me wrong, this DVD was good. I just don't think it's the place to start to get into yoga. Level 1 is not a true beginners level. For a more gentle yoga workout, I recommend Leah Bracknell Yoga and You. PS. Don't bother to watch Jayne's diaries. Really utterly pointless.
Love Yoga May 25, 2008 Angela (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been practising yoga for 4 years and I found this dvd pitched at the right level for me. If I were a beginner, I would find holding the postures for a long time a bit of a challenge but you have to not push yourself and stop if you need to. My only criticism is there is no emphasis on warm-ups at the beginning so I do 10 mins of my own before practice. The mix of postures, standing, sitting, forward bends is good, so a gives you a good overall mix. I liked Ryan's calm, soft approach which helps calm the mind too. Relaxation is great at the end too. Jane stays silent so the dvd is not 'gimmicky'. Ryan's voice reminds me of Ross from 'Friends' [!], however, I love the setting and pleasing to watch.
Best! Shavasana! Ever!!! January 14, 2008 KatyD (Ireland) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have a modest library of about 20 yoga DVDs (and growing) and this one has by far the best relaxation session of the bunch. It's long and leisurely, with subtle, floaty music and just the right amount of guidance from Ryan Spielman to induce complete physical and mental relaxation. I find the shavasana lacking in different ways (too short, too talky, music too upbeat, etc.) on many of my other DVDs, and often use this one - it's chaptered as a separate practice - at the end of other workouts. By the time I get to the relaxation I've usually earned it. Ryan Spielman teaches a strong, well-aligned posture flow. It doesn't say so anywhere on the disc, but there's an Iyengar flavour to the proceedings. He pays due attention to the placement of feet, the angle of a knee, the turn of a neck and so on. Timing wise, his cueing is spot on. For the moment I'm content at level one - designed for beginners, but fairly challenging. It's a grounded, thorough set of sun salutes and standing poses with long, testing holds. Then floor work - back bends, some powerful hip stretches and forward bends. Level 2 moves on faster and deeper - I'll get there some day, I hope. I have to confess I hadn't heard of Jayne Middlemiss when I ordered the DVD. I thought she was the yoga instructor. She takes the same approach as Ali McGraw on the (wonderful) Erich Schiffman workout - staying silent, and letting the master speak. Result: two beautifully executed, expertly taught yoga sessions, filmed amid gorgeous scenery. A+
BUY IT October 17, 2007 Miss D (Mumbles) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My favourite Yoga DVD is Ali McGraw's, however, now that I have seen this it's equal. One reviewer had a grumble about the length the asanas were being held for, well you are supposed to hold the pose for as long as possible because that's what makes Yoga work. This DVD is thorough, inspirational and full of sound advice and IT GIVES YOU A LIFT. Both presenters are great and Jayne is very human - they really do make you want to get up and do it. I definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to know what real Yoga is all about.
