For beginners - take your partners November 3, 2008 MaxC (London, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you can already dance a few formal steps, this DVD is perhaps too basic for you. It teaches you just enough to shuffle around a crowded dance floor with some confidence, but no way is it enough to put on a bit of a show, for example your "first dance" at your wedding. It covers 8 dance styles, four "white tie" styles and four Latin. If you're starting from zero, this is the place to start. It's fun, and not at all overwhelming.
SHORT BUT SWEET September 17, 2008 M. Teff 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
LEN IS AS GENTLE, CHEEKY AND CHARMING AS EVER. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE TEACHING IS SO LIMITED THOUGH. DON'T EXPECT TO SEE MUCH VARIETY IN THE STEPS. FUN AND FRUITY BUT SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN.
Len's effective introduction to dance March 10, 2007 Jervis 31 out of 31 found this review helpful
The introduction of 'Strictly Come Dancing' to our tv screens has opened up a whole new audience to the magic of dancing. It's also made Len Goodman a celebrity and this is perhaps a reason why this DVD potentially has wide appeal. This DVD is therefore aimed at the 'Strictly Come Dancing' audience. Len does a fine job of introducing each dance, giving a brief summary of its history and going over many of the basic steps with the aid of his helpers. He breaks down the routines extremely well with his clear and easy to understand explanations sprinkled with his touch of humour. It's also exciting to see how the dances look in their more advanced form which Len's shows us with the aid of his helpers. What must always be remembered about ballroom dancing is the only true way to learn is by attending dance classes. It's true Len just scratches the surface of these dances but anyone who is more serious about dance and therefore more advanced would surely be looking for something more specialised anyway. This DVD is designed as an introduction for anyone who has a mild interest in dancing and would like a little more basic knowledge. It may wet the appetite of some viewers into attending dance classes. On those terms it works rather well.
Not bad, but expected more content. February 10, 2007 R. L. De Paoli (Surrey) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Very basic steps for absolute beginners introducing eight popular dances. Speaking as a two-left-footed novice I expected a more structured progressive lesson plan, more routines to practice. Len has nicely scratched the surface and left you wanting much more. The featured pros on Len's DVD are a great inspiration. In conclusion, a very short fun introduction to dance.
Very Disappointing January 13, 2007 Harrier Man (Scotland) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
This DVD is not good value, even at Amazon's keen price. There are only 4 ballroom dances and 4 Latin immediately halving its value if you are interested in only one style. Half the disc is comprises one piece of music for each of the 8 dances so that you can practice. That for me meant only a quarter of the content was of any interest. That content is very, very basic and would be exhausted after an hour's beginner dance class. Len explains those basics well but there should definitely be more steps and techniques. For me, the content is worth 2- 3. I have watched it once and there is just not enough in it to entice me to watch it again.
