Amazon.co.uk Review A flat-out treasure trove of television, The Sopranos Complete HBO Seasons 1-6 box set brings together every episode of a genuinely extraordinary series. Those that call it quite possibly the best show America has produced in the last decade aren't far wide of the mark (although fans of The Wire could have an argument there). To think The Sopranos all started from a simple sell: that a New Jersey mob boss falls into depression, and seeks out counselling to help him cope. And while early episodes followed Tony Soprano's balancing act as he sought to keep this from his mobster friends, The Sopranos took this foundation and built upon it a collection of layered, intriguing characters from both Tony's `work' and `home' families. That's only part of the reason for The Sopranos' extraordinary success, though. Because the writers then seeded many delightfully intricate plotlines, that seemed to seamlessly weave between one another. The end result was that every character was important, and--crucially--there was a real sense of unease, as fans began to realise that The Sopranos could have a quiet run of episodes, and then suddenly take out a character you've spent hours engaged with. It's a fascinating cocktail. Ruthless yet emotional, violent yet intimate, brash yet insecure, the characters of The Sopranos are as three dimensional as television drama gets. It's a tragedy it's finished, but the six series in this box offer a stunning legacy, and a masterclass to anyone else in the planet looking to make a character-driven drama. --Simon Brew

The Greatest drama ever July 19, 2008 R. Adams (uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Id never seen the show until a friend recommended watching it while i recover from the flu.I took the plunge and a week and a half later i had seen something that will stay with me forever. The characters come to life in fantastic three dimensional portrayals from some seriously fine acting as does the life of Italian Americans from New Jersey its about family and all that entails. It touches on the very fabric of society on our hopes and dreams and on the post 911 world we now live in. Yes its got violence but never let that put you off because that is really not what this show is about. Its got humor although often dark it will make you laugh at the most horrible of situations. Truly the only thing I would advise is to take your time because at the end of the last episode you will be sitting in silence desperately wanting more. Simply put Wow

Never be beaten April 30, 2008 Tangerine (North Yorkshire) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Perhaps one day, many moons from now, somebody will pen a script, mould a story, acquire a magnificent cast and somehow create a television show that will better The Sopranos. Perhaps. I doubt it. This boxset is of course the entire set of Sopranos episodes and its utterly fantastic. Its as close to perfection as I could ever imagine television getting. Its sure to be more to somes taste than others but I just find it compelling to watch. Hilarious one moment, almost shocking the next. Utter genius. For those not yet aware of this masterpiece Tony Soprano is the main protaganist in this show. He is the boss of the New Jersey 'Family' and we view him plot his way through incident after incident. Fight after fight. Woman after woman and death after death. The best way to appreciate this television programme is to purchase the boxset and watch it. I have no doubt that it will be the best 100 quid or so you ever spend. If you like television and you like a story that will grip you then look no further. Within the red and black cardboard box is the finest piece of television ever made. Simply magnificent. Get it now so you don't have to regret not owning it anymore!

Having been an avid fan of the gangster genre for some years, I came to the party late with The Sopranos, having missed it's debut on terrestrial tv some years back, I opted not to try and follow the tale half way through.Instead, I took the plunge and waited for the release of the entire series and started right at the beginning. I've just spent the last three months being captivated by this show! It takes some time and investment on the viewer to appreciate the drama and performance of the cast involved. This is more than just a conventional gangster drama and you find yourself being drawn into the interplay of Tony and the characters that inhabit his world.Gripping, addictive and intense at times, once this show gets under your skin, you will find yourself forfeiting other shows for this one! As a whole this is a fascinating and compelling drama. If looked at season by season, I thought the middle instalments of series 2 and 3 to be the highlight of the entire run. This could've run and run for many years but goes out on a high, although much discussion has arose from the ambiguous conclusion. Great cast, terrific writing, sharp dialogue. This collection comes in a nice shoe box and works out cheaper than collecting the individual box sets.If you have yet to see this show and feel a little intrigued, go buy this, you won't be disappointed. I was sorry to reach the end, it became such essential viewing. I'm now working my way through The Shield and am finding that to be as equally compulsive, but hey, that's another review!
