Amazon.co.uk Review
Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and! Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sw! eeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly ! as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and a fantastic Blu ray   November 10, 2008

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is another classic Indy adventure which stands up extremely well to the first three movies in the series. Those who were upset by what they saw as an 'unrealistic ending' obviously have never seen the ending to an Indiana Jones film! Put simply, this is classic Indiana Jones.
Now onto the Blu ray disc itself - the image is crystal clear and the sound is superb. There are also numerous making-ofs and trailers. The only thing that would have made this release even better would have been a commentary track by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
All in all, this is a great movie and if you are a true Indiana Jones fan, you won't be disappointed by this.

3 out of 5 stars fun, but Indy showing his age . . .   October 28, 2008

This movie is lots of fun to watch, but it doesn't take itself seriously and probably shouldn't be part of the Indiana Jones canon. Harrison Ford is a great actor, and I loved most of the previous movies, but he's getting a bit old in the tooth for the stunts he was supposed to be doing in the film and I was a bit dissapointed, especially towards the end where the film just spirals off, and seems to loose the plot altogether. I'm sure there probably is still a lot of people that might enjoy this film, but both my missus and myself give this an unfortunate thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars Hennery Jones ... Junior, part time teacher   October 25, 2008

Wow it is all there, the formula the action the mystery and the frillier actors. If that is not enough we have new actors of great caliber and some new one liners to repeat to friends and family. Everything that made the original Indiana Jones films has been intensified.

Karen Allen's character is just as cut and feisty as ever. It takes a couple of double takes to realize that Col. Dr. Irina Spalko is the Academy Award wining Cate Blanchett in a Natasha outfit. I could go on but it is time for you to see for your self.

My favorite scene is where Indy is being showered down, hosed off and scrubbed. Watch closely as he is being scrubbed in a private part of his anatomy and has to make a broom adjustment.
--------------------------------------
It is the height of the Cold War. The Ruskies are looking for an upper hand. Naturally they look for the super natural or inter-dimensional physic advantage. And of course they get Dr. Hennery Jones Jr. (much older Harrison Ford) to unwittingly play into their hands. With the help of a young sidekick Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) he must find a crystal skull in an effort to free his kidnapped associate Henry Oxley (John Hurt). In the process he has to navigate between two independent women Col. Dr. Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) and Marion Ravenswood (Karen Allen.)

Watch the movie to find out the mystery of the scull and if Indy, oops Hennery Jones Jr. will succeed or stick his fedora in it. Bring your ant spray.

I have to admit I waited for Blu-ray so I can not compare to non Blu-ray versions.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic if you can get over the lack of story   October 14, 2008

While the film's story misses the mark, its visuals prove that Spielberg hasn't lost his touch as a director. Visually, the Blu-ray transfer remains consistently high-quality - vibrant colours, strong detail, little additional grain or distortion. There is a small amount of noticeable digitization, and while the detail never gets quite a sharp as one might like, the CG sequences - such as the jungle and waterfall scenes, or any moment in the last fifteen minutes - come across the best. They're well-integrated into the image, clear and crisp without being overly so.

The Dolby TruHD track is a high-volume, larger-than-life experience. The complex, layered sound design of this film is an ideal showcase for this kind of technology. With sound effects provided by audio wizard Ben Burtt and that familiar, soaring score by John Williams, you want to hear every single element with clarity, and you do. There's a lot of movement in the field from all sides, so gunshots seem to zoom right past you and explosions erupt from all around. The essential car chases and fights are lively, but not too crowded. The dialogue is clear throughout the action and if the standard-def transfer was near-perfect, this transfer is downright perfection.

This Blu-ray release offers the same set of extras provided on the two-disc standard-def version, though each of the carry-overs are presented here in HD.

If there's one word to describe this collection of features it would be thorough. Every step of the filmmaking process has been documented, from the origin of the idea to post production, with a plethora of interviews and footage to illustrate the journey. Although Spielberg remains a staunch holdout among directors who refuse to participate in audio commentary, it's hard to imagine that it would give any further insight beyond what is already provided in the supplemental material.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may not have lived up to the hype, but it was clearly a labour of love for all involved, and this release shows all the work that went into making it. It's just too bad the same amount of work didn't go into the writing.

4 out of 5 stars It's Good, But I Found Myself Being Disappointed By The Ending.   October 12, 2008

Don't worry, I'm not going to spoil the ending for you but If I do with my ramblings then I apologise. The year is 1957 and a group of soviet soldiers break into a secret military base with an aged Indiana Jones. They want him to lead them to a box containing a mysterious mummified corpse which will help lead them to the powerful yet mysterious crystal skull. When they manage to locate the crystal skull and return it to its original resting place, unknown powers will be unleashed that if returned by the leading soviet lady Irina Spalko, it could mean a drastic turn in the cold war for the west.

Now myself, like many others were doubtful that a fourth Indiana Jones film could work just as well as the originals. Not to sound ageist but the age of Harrison Ford was one of the main concerns when playing such a role. Literally from the first few scenes starting with the warehouse, my doubts were squashed. Harrison seemed on form with his action sequences, although I'm sure the stunt double played a particularly larger part in this instalment. Accompanying Indy on his missions this time around is a young, cocky, motorcycle riding 60s cliché called Mutt (LaBeouf). Don't worry though because this instalment isn't just starring one original cast member as an old Raiders of the Lost Ark love interest Marian Ravenwood comes back to reclaim Indy's heart. Oh and she's also Mutts mother, see the connection there?

The action for this film is easily the best I've seen from any Indy film and that's including the classic boulder scene. Of course the CGI was destined to play a big part in a new Indy film and it really does. That doesn't take anything away from it, however, as the CG really is flawless and presents the environments with a genuine rapport to them.

Overall it's a genuinely good film, the ending is a bit random and in some ways disappointing. It keeps the classic humorous moments in over the top situations, I have a genuine respect for Harrison Ford for what he's done in this film. He's shown that he can still hang with the young action stars of today and it definitely had its passing of the torch moment in relation to LaBeouf. I would recommend it to any film lover and wouldn't separate it from the entire Indy series as it's definitely kept the trend of being a satisfying action movie.
