5 out of 5 stars A story about finding 'the beauty in the beast'!   August 3, 2007

"Beauty and the Beast", produced in 1992 by Golden Films and the American Film Investment Corporation and recently released onto DVD format by GoodTimes Entertainment is based on the familiar fairy tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. It is the story of a beautiful and good-hearted young girl named Beauty who, when her father loses all of his ships at sea and is cheated out of his great fortune, leaves her elegant home in the city to move to the countryside. Though her two sisters, Alicia and Pauline, have trouble adjusting, Beauty has an easier time because of her optimism and high spirits. Soon afterward, the old gentleman and his two sons, Beauty's brothers Nathan and Robert, receive news that one of their ships has docked in the harbor and instantly believe they may be rich again. As the old gentleman prepares to leave, her two daughters have many requests, Beauty on the other hand, asks for one simple red rose as a gift. Still, the old gentleman soon finds himself returning home as poor as ever, for his ship had returned damaged beyond repair and the cargo destroyed. On his way through the woods, the old man loses his way and finds an enchanted castle he had never seen before. He spends the night at the castle and the next day, as he prepares to leave he plucks one simple rose from the castle gardens, as a gift for Beauty, and just as he cuts the rose, a terrible beast appears, angry that the man should steal from him even after giving him food and shelter for the night. The beast tells the old gentleman that he shall die for having taken the rose, but when he mentions his daughter Beauty, the beast agrees to let him go home and have Beauty return and be punished instead. The old man returns home with no intention of allowing his most precious daughter to be harmed. Circumstances change things and soon, Beauty finds herself at the castle, determined to take her father's place. Instead of killing her, the beast is soon charmed by Beauty and promises to grant her every wish, soon the two of them become great friends and Beauty learns to see past the beast's ugliness. Still, there are people who oppose to their friendship, such as Beauty's two jealous sisters and a dark, mysterious fairy who haunts Beauty in her dreams, warning her about the beast's cruel and wicked heart.

This was the last of the seven animated features in Diane Eskenazi's Golden Films series that I saw, because it had become unavailable in Spain. Many people will likely spend too much time comparing this humble version of the classic tale to that of Walt Disney Pictures released the year before. I will say right now that in terms of technical and animation qualities, this film comes nowhere as near as high, but it is still a beautiful movie. This is probably Golden Films' weaker film in terms of animation quality, which to me looks a bit a silly, even the backgrounds are not as detailed as those seen in other Golden Films productions such as "Thumbelina" (1992) (which by the way is a personal favorite) and "The Three Musketeers". The films does, however, feature carefully chosen familiar classical melodies and one original song, "The Beauty in the Beast". I would not recommend this film to adults seeking great animation, instead, this film is designed to delight young children, children at heart, or even open-minded adults who don't mind inferior animation when a good story is placed before them. Highly recommended.
