5 out of 5 stars The story of a man 'as brave as man can be'!   August 3, 2007
Taran Wanderer (Chicago, IL)
"Sinbad", produced in 1992 by Golden Films and recently released onto DVD format by GoodTimes Entertainment is based on the timeless Arabian Nights tales of the brave sailor Sinbad. It is the story of the young Sinbad, he and his servant Habib are cruising the seven seas aboard Captain Asis' great ship after the noble sailor had spent all of his father's fortune on said trip. However, the ship is soon seen under attack by a great sea-monster and Sinbad and Habib are left stranded in the middle of the ocean, where Captain Asis and his crew believe they perished. The currents carry Sinbad and Habib off to the strange island of Salabat where they meet the kind King Jamaal and his children. Enthralled by the tales of heroism from the brave sailor, King Jamaal asks his new friend a big favor; to marry his daughter Nafia. Sinbad promises to marry the princess, but soon learns that she has the face of a goat and plans to escape. Together with his servant, Sinbad is successful in escaping aboard Captain Asis' ship which has docked near by, but are soon discovered and tracked down by an angered King Jamaal. The king feels betrayed and wishes to punish both Sinbad and his servant; for this, he sends them off to a dangerous island filled with untold dangers. There, Sinbad and Habib must use all of their strength, bravery and intelligence to survive and return to civilization, becoming wealthy along the way.

This short, fifty-minute animated film has amused me since I was very young. It is true, perhaps, that its animation values are not as high as Disney animations, or anywhere near. Even the backgrounds don't compare to the amount of detail seen in other Golden Films productions such as "Thumbelina" (1992) and "The Three Musketeers" (1992). Still, the film tells an adventurous tale that any child will surely enjoy. Good lines, excellent choices of familiar classical pieces for a soundtrack (something very common in Golden Films' productions) and a very catchy theme song, "As Brave As A Man Can Be". The film tells some of the greatest adventures of the timeless hero and I fully recommend it for children looking for a good fifty minutes of film-viewing. Closed-minded adults who value high production values rather than a good story should stay away from this title, for they're bound to be disappointed. Highly recommended.
