Mising episodes October 29, 2008 spud-the-mud (Vienna, Austria) I do not know about other people, but the copy I bought last week has no "Darling Buds of May" section. Disc 1 starts with "When the Green Woods Laugh" (listed as the second item on the cardboard cover, after "The Darling Buds of May") - Mariette and Charlie are already enganged and what is essentially the best part of the whole book set, when Charlie learns to use his loaf and develops his technique, is missing, along with the introduction of the General, the Pilch and Angela Snow. I got my daughter, who is more technologically proficient, to check this. No "Darling Buds of May" is present on the disc. My girlfriend watched it and could not make head nor tail of it as the characters appeared from nowhere. So if you buy it, be very sure that you have what you expect; it seems that there are two sets of discs about, one set with all the episodes, one set without. I cannot comment on the acting etc - I only watched about 10 minutes or so before giving up.
Another great show! October 6, 2008 Ms. Nancy J. Steele (Vermont/USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with the other reviews.. also wanted to say that all the episodes are there. I almost did not buy this when I read on a review that episodes were missing. They aren't missing. I checked the episode guide on numerous sites and it is complete.. Enjoy!
Missing the 2nd parts to two episodes August 18, 2008 Emmzer (Ireland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Am I the only one who has noticed that 'Cast not your pearls before swine' AND 'climb the greasy pole' both have two parts but the 2nd parts are not on the dvd or in the boxset for that matter? What is that all about? You're left wondering what Pa Larking does about being swindled? Tut!
Great Set, But Flawed April 13, 2008 Paul Jones (Sturbridge, MA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a great set containing six discs of the entire series. Disc 1 has an audio commentary, which reveals some interesting facts such as "Ma Larkin" actually being a vegetarian in real life and "Charlie's" hair being dyed. The only downer for me is the fact that the shows are spliced together. Being a completist I have to admit to being disappointed, but by the third disc however, it's like they gave up and we suddenly revert to a 2 part episode. Still, it's worth every penny.
A feelgood, family friendly classic series March 24, 2008 Mr. B. Charles (Bristol, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Darling Buds of May is a fantastic series featuring David Jason at his typical best. The stories have a real feel good factor about them incorporating a mixture of happiness, humour and fun. David Jason's portrayal as 'Pop Larkin' is superb, particularly during the dialogue scenes with Pam Ferris as 'Ma Larkin' and his interaction with some of the other supporting characters Edith Pilchester and "the General". A particular highlight for me is the episode where the Larkin's take a holiday in France, Pop is mistaken as an English Lord; and ends with an impromptu party to mark the wedding anniversary of Charlie and Mariette. If you're looking for some good family friendly drama you can't go far wrong than with the Larkins in "The Darling Buds of May".
